I recently published the 2nd edition of my book “Gross Deceptive Product” in which I said that economic growth is the most serious environmental threat ever faced by the human race. I think I made a sound argument to support this statement. If anyone disagrees with this I would love to hear what they believe is more serious and why.

SCORAI friends:

I have just finished a new film about the life and work of famed ecological economist Herman Daly, a strong advocate of sustainable consumption.  Early reviews of the film can be found here:  Reviews — ECONOCLAST
The website is still under construction though mostly done, and the link is:  www.econoclast.film

Here is what Philip and Halina have written about the filmt:

In 1877, Victor Hugo wrote, ” Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come."  Herman Daly’s idea of steady state economy and the deadly effects of endless economic growth is such an idea. This new documentary beautifully tells the story of that idea. The realization that infinite economic growth on a finite planet is not possible is gaining traction among younger professionals. But a  radical change of an entire economic system seems like an impossibly difficult challenge. It will most likely take a major crisis – ecological, economic and political – to trigger it; and a lot of human suffering in the process. --Halina Brown and Philip Vergragt, co-founders, Sustainable Consumption Research and Action Initiative (SCORAI), Newton, MA

And here is what Tim Jackson says about it:

At last. A timely and deeply moving portrait of the revolutionary economist economics tried to ignore. Daly’s impeccable good sense and sheer humanity shine through every frame of John de Graaf’s beautifully crafted and long-awaited tribute to an extraordinary man.  --Tim Jackson, Author of Prosperity Without Growth, University of Surrey, England

I'm hoping many of you can organize screenings of the film in your communities or institutions.  If you are interested, please email me at:  jo...@comcast.net  and I will send you a link to the film.

Our first screening will be in Hungary for the Balaton group on September 22, followed by screenings in Duluth, MN, Minneapolis, Hartford, CT, Burlington, VT, Montreal, and the Canadian Society for Ecological Economics national convention in Sydney, Nova Scotia  Please check out hte website, and the reviews.  I hope you will find the film useful

All best,
John
