Dear SCORAIers,

I would like to invite you to the next cross-pollination session (online via Zoom) of the joint SCORAI and Future Earth working group on sustainable consumption communication (WgCoCo).  This time, out guest will be Prof. Iain Black from the University of Strathclyde) The topic is “Communicating positive (social) tipping points – opportunities, campaigns, and rebuttals.”. As usual, we will start with an impulse input of our speaker and then have plenty of time to discuss the topic with our speaker and with each other, exchange ideas, chat and connect with each other.

Further information about this time’s topic:

We recognise that systems change is required urgently to address the climate and biodiversity crises.  But how do you change systems across scales?  In this interactive session, we will explore the concept of Positive Social Tipping Points and how our understanding of sustainable communications and communications more broadly can help trigger and maintain deep and lasting changes to social systems.  The session aims to gather our collective understanding and experience and feed this into an ongoing body of work contributing to the updated Global tipping points report (Global-tipping-points-report 2023) to be published at COP 30, Belem, Brazil, November 2025.

Our invited guest speaker:

Iain Black is Professor of Sustainable Consumption at the University of Strathclyde Business School. His main areas of expertise and interest are in the fields of sustainable consumption and climate change, contributing to SDG’s 12, 4 & 13. His research focuses on why people choose not to consume (anti-consumption), responses to scarcity and why we say will act sustainably but don’t. This has taken him recently into exploring systems leverage points, deliberate attempts to slow positive social tipping points and deep learning for sustainability.

He is the Faculty PRME Director and focuses his KE work on as Director of the Climate Solutions Programme (https://www.climatesolutionsnetwork.com/). Over 135,000 students have studied these online and blended courses focussed on upskilling businesses.

Time and date:

June 24th (Tuesday), 7:00 AM EDT – 13:00 CET – 8:00 pm JST
