Dear all,

the next two lab meetings are scheduled for

** November 18th **

and

** December 16th ** (together with the VIVA)

For these next two meetings, we have one spot left open for a talk/presentation. I would therefore like to ask you if anyone of you wants to present at the next meeting (November).

To help you remember, there are already several options for talks to give (coming up with more!!):

- Project / data presentation

- Discussing an article / ‘hot topic’ (journal club)

- Discussing a rejection (paper/grant)

I want to encourage you to send me other ideas for presentations to include in the list.

If there is no interest in presenting at the next meeting, I will assign someone for the open spot in November. From next year on I will schedule the talks for the lab meetings, so this will no longer be a problem. More about that later.

For now I would like to ask you to let me know by Friday (Oct 25) if you want to present this year.

Thank you.

Very best,

Katha

Hi all,
it’s only possible to present at the November meeting.
The december meeting will be combined with the VIVA and the talks scheduled are given by the Professors that are here for the defenses.

So if anyone wants to give a talk in November, let me know!

Best,
Katha

For future presentations (not in November) I could give:
- a talk about the R statistical framework and NHST analyses
- a talk about bayesian analysis (with R and JAGS)

See you,
Michè

I think from Genuary our sub-group should be able to provide the following:

- Paper discussion (you and/or Valentina)
- Data presentation (Me)
- Guess what they have said (hopefully; me; I have some Idea how to make it more interactive)
- Project presentation (all of us)

Dear All, Dear Michele,

I was checking the planned topics of Michele's presentation (which I am excited to attend) and realized that it uses the same programing language as one free course from Princeton University (https://www.coursera.org/course/stats1). Indeed, this course is intended to provide introduction in R programming language and fundamental concepts of statistics. However it's about to finish, but I believe you can still enroll and download the videos (if not, I can do that in case someone needs them). Maybe could be good addition to Michele's talk?

Also, I would like to let you know that Coursera provides courses on potentially helpful topics such as "Statistical Analysis of fMRI Data" (starting in feb, 2014), in case someone is struggling with these issues.

All Best,
B

Thanks a lot Bijana,
I'll take a look for my talk and I'll try to figure what it will be possible to do in a single talk...
I don't think there will be enough time to introduce R, so the possibility to see practical examples is limited, but I'll do my best.
Sadly, last time I checked coursera, there isn't a course on Bayesian Statistics... is it?

Bye,

Michele

Guys,

To answer Michele's question and to offer "a slice" of the "magic Bayesian cake" (even though I know that you didn't have this in mind and I'm sorry to spoil your "appetite") :D...
...I found some lectures on the MIT Open Courseware, since indeed Coursera doesn't offer similar course.

This is the link (btw the lectures are not time-constrained but also usually not video-supported)
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/health-sciences-and-technology/hst-951j-medical-decision-support-spring-2003/lecture-notes/

As evident, they are scarce in information, so I'm sure we are looking forward to Michele's talk.

However, for the holidays, I wish you could forget about the above-mentioned cake and get your highs from the amazing Italian food...and of course, from love :)

Happy Holidays,
Billy
