This thread is to do discuss which tags are necessary and propose ones to be added for use within the forum.

The following rules should be considered when determining a suitable tag name:
  1. Is the tag general enough to encompass a wide range of issues which can be considered related, if not, it is possible that you may wish to re-evaluate the proposed tag.
  2. Does any other tag already encompass this type of thread?  In which case, you may need to reconsider whether there is need for an additional tag.

The following format should apply in your proposal:

  1. Proposed tag name
  2. Purpose (description)
  3. Example applicable thread (gives context)

Proposed tag:
Enhancement

Purpose:
Self describing, to encompass those threads which discuss a requirement from the software/library to be enhanced as a result of it not being currently available.

Example applicable thread:

Just adding some more ideas here...

We certainly need a hook on which to hang requests about other fileformats, such as PP and Grib.
I did a quick breakdown of my old saved Remedy tickets for iris into categories, which delivered the following
  • PLOTTING - 10
  • DATA MODELLING and CODING  - 4
    • (includes things like MDI handling, hybrid heights, time values)
  • REGRID AND EXTRACT - 6
  • PP - 2
  • GRIB - 2
  • NETCDF - 3
  • OTHER LOAD AND SAVE - 2
  • OTHER - 5
    • (general help + coding advice, bugs, etc)
From this I'd propose combining the file-format ones.
My record is a bit short because I've lost older ones, but from experience I'd also suggest a "MathsAndStats" tag.
We could then have tags something like these ...
  • Plotting
  • RegridAndExtract
  • LoadAndSave
  • MetadataAndCoordinates
  • MathsAndStats

I think this set is then also a pretty good match for the main User Guide topics
  • Loading Iris cubes
  • Navigating a cube
  • Reducing a Cube
  • Introduction to plotting in Iris
  • Cube statistics
  • Basic cube mathematics

pp-mo,

would your list:

  • Plotting
  • RegridAndExtract
  • LoadAndSave
  • MetadataAndCoordinates
  • MathsAndStats
be acceptable in this form?:
  • Plotting
  • Analysis
  • IO
  • Metadata

My I suggest following the proposed format for tag proposals as we then get some context with real threads, since I think it would be preferable to encompass at-least all tickets currently existing (as their number is currently rather small).

The following format should apply in your proposal:

  1. Proposed tag name
  2. Purpose (description)
  3. Example applicable thread (gives context)
However, I do agree with the proposed by pp-mo and modified by bblay.  What of my enhancement tag?

Important:  I propose we make them always lower case (its crucial that this is decided at this time)

I don't so much like some of these terms as I think they're too general to be really obvious what it is actually about
For example -
Metadata : for questions about coordinates and coordinate values, but also missing-data etc
Analysis : too broad a term -- in addition to maths and stats this would include regrid extract and merge

I'm beginning to think that the terms I've used above should be available in themselves, then maybe we can expect more posts with multiple tags
-- this is more how tags are 'supposed' to work anyway (as opposed to a categorisation approach)

More (less broad) tags can make it possible to keep each one to a single word
Here's a possible list ...
  plot
  grib pp netcdf
  regrid merge extract
  maths stats analysis
  coordinates metadata

Note: I'm still not sure about 'analysis'.  Looking into the current Iris documentation, we have these sub-packages : calculus cartography geometry interpolate maths trajectory
