I have started a gitter chat room for Iris (which you can access here: https://gitter.im/SciTools/iris). A badge for the gitter has also been added to the README.md in the Iris repo.
The intention for the gitter is to facilitate discussions between Iris developers. We already have google groups as a method of communication but I think gitter may be a place for more informal discussions.
To join the conversation, all you have to do is go to the link above and then click on the orange “JOIN ROOM” button at the bottom of the page.
