CF 1.7, climatologies

Hi,

at the moment iris supports only CF-1.5, which is a bit behind the
current CF-1.7 and the upcoming CF-1.8.

There are two issues at the moment that touch on this, both related to
climatologies, which is also the context in which I myself am struggling
with this now.

Is there interest to support more recent CF versions?

Could we maybe start a project to move this along?

Do you have an overview of what the shortcomings here are?
