Evernote Moleskine Smart Notebook w/iPad and iPhone App

Evernote Moleskine Smart Notebook w/iPad and iPhone App Posted: 07 Jan 2013 12:00 AM PST Moleskine Evernote Smart Notebook Today we have a guest review of the new Evernote Moleskine Smart Notebook from one of our readers, Will Hopkins. Will was kind enough to take on the task of writing this review since I am not an iPhone/iPad user, oh and maybe it helped that we bribed him with a free version of the notebook to try out. So lets see what Will has to say, shall we. One line verdict: I like the Evernote Moleskine. The longer story: A lot of what I like about the Evernote Moleskine has to do with its general notebook qualities, as opposed to its Evernoteness or Moleskineness. As far as themed Moleskines go, it is relatively nondescript. I appreciate that. The ornamentation isn’t important—what goes inside it *is*. There are 2 elements that make it stand out a bit more, though. The deposed cover and the green ribbon/elastic. I like both, and they’re just subtle enough. One other important difference from a traditional Moleskine is the dotted ruling. In general I prefer dot or grid notebooks, but the dot ruling actually appeals to me. I noticed the ruling when I first opened the notebook, and wondered how I’d feel as I used it. As it turns out, after weeks of sketching, scribbling math problems, and occasional journalings, I really like it. As I understand it, the dot ruling helps Evernote’s Page Camera line everything up, and the ruling practically disappears when scanned or photographed. The lines are also just hidden enough to allow for free styling while still being a useful writing guide. In my opinion, Moleskine should do all its rulings this way. The notebook also comes with a set of stickers in the pocket at the back. To be honest, I barely used them. They do stand out reasonably well, but, while eye-catching, they were a pain to pull out and use. Perhaps for someone who relies more on notebooks (within Evernote) and quick categorization they would be more valuable. Now, on to the paper. In short, it’s just like all other Moleskine paper. I like the off-white color, and it worked well with my Pilot G-Tec-C, my daily writer. I didn’t dare bring my fountain pens near it, though. The Platinum Preppy worked okay with only a little bleed-through at the ends of letters. Most of my inks and pens run much wetter, though. I found myself using the Evernote Moleskine quite often, more than I had anticipated. It served most of my daily notebook needs and became the first thing I grabbed for longer writing. The Evernote Premium 3-month subscription included in the back pocket was a nice addition and definitely incentivized me to scan pages more frequently than I would have otherwise. The way the pages laid flat made it great for quick digital archiving, but the actual scan quality differed little from a Pelle journal or Field Notes notebook. It’s also worth pointing out that Page Camera did no better than Jot Not Pro, but it did remove a few steps from the process. That is definitely worth considering if you scan your notebook pages on the go regularly. See my scanned note here, or below for one of the scanned pages. Evernote Moleskine Smart Journal Page Scan If you use Evernote, want to try Premium service, and need a new large-format notebook, give the Evernote Moleskine Smart Journal a try. It’s a solid performer with some nice perks, but don’t expect it to change your workflow much by itself. © 2013, OfficeSupplyGeek. All rights reserved. Trakdot Luggage tracker
Posted: 07 Jan 2013 09:07 AM PST
Trakdot Luggage tracker Posted: 07 Jan 2013 08:51 AM PST It does not really matter whether you do a whole lot of traveling, or you just pack your suitcase once a year for the annual company trip – either way, the moment your luggage gets out from your home, there is always a risk of your luggage going missing, or being rerouted to somewhere else. I suppose necessity being the mother of invention holds true, which is why the Trakdot Luggage tracker was born – or rather, brought into existence. The SITA claims that nearly 26 million bags actually go missing each year from airports all over this big blue globe that we live in. Well, you need not let that statistic spoil your upcoming journey, as travelers who are deeply concerned about the safety of valuables are now able to enjoy a simple, affordable luggage tracking solution from Trakdot. Basically, the Trakdot Luggage tracker is tiny enough to fit into a checked bag, where it will get to work reporting city location in real time just about to any mobile, Apple, Android, or SMS capable devices. Nice to know that the lowest common denominator is served here, meaning there is no need to own a smartphone just to make use of the Trakdot. The Trakdot Luggage tracker was specially built for travel convenience, as it comes in the form of a palm-sized tracker which is extremely light, and will fit nicely into just about any size bag. The luggage locator system itself is capable of delivering city-specific information on the whereabouts of checked baggage in real time. In the rather unfortunate event of the Trakdot protected bag arriving somewhere else, at least you know just which city is it "parked" at, so there is no need to fret. The Trakdot Luggage tracker will arrive in the mass market from March this year at $49.95 a pop, where it is accompanied by an activation fee of $8.99 and an annual service fee of $12.99. Press Release [ Trakdot Luggage tracker copyright by Coolest Gadgets ] | Mobio Go, Grip and Pivot help accessorize your mobile devices Posted: 07 Jan 2013 05:30 AM PST Mobio has just announced a trio of accessories for your mobile devices, where they come in the form of the Mobio Go, Mobio Grip and Mobio Pivot. In fact, dime a dozen does not really describe it best, it would be a gazillion iDocks hanging around on store shelves, looking pitifully at the masses who walk by each day, hoping that someone would rescue them from such a mediocre existence so that they can really show off to the listener just what kind of audio performance they are capable of. Well, the $25.99 Boom Dock iSpeaker does not need to rest on a store shelf, as you can always make an online purchase and have it delivered right to your doorstep. Apart from that, it also comes in a shape of a boom box, meaning you can relive those old school moments of your youth as you blast current tunes via a retro looking device. As for old faithful, you might as well send it into retirement and perform an upgrade by picking up the (relatively lightweight) Boom Dock iSpeaker. It allows you to tote the boombox around without having to struggle much, and you also need not sacrifice your sense of musical style. Be mindful though, the Boom Dock iSpeaker will rely on power from your connected iDevice, meaning it has no batteries built in, but your iDevice will be sucked dry faster than normal. It will play nice with the iPod mini, classic and 3rd to 5th generations, iPod nano 1st to 5th generations, iPod touch, iPhone and iPad. Case in point (pardon the pun) would be Griffin's Survivor + Catalyst Waterproof Case for iPhone 5, where it will bring together Catalyst's expertise in designing waterproof products alongside more than two decades of experience at Griffin as one of the most established companies in the iOS accessory space. Touted to be one of the most technical waterproof products available in the market as at press time, this is certainly a whole lot more convincing compared to the original Survivor case by Griffin. Its predecessor (and of course, also its inspiration) was built to military standards, and it has also lived to be synonymous with extreme-duty protection for mobile devices, making it ready for everyday life and adventures. In fact, the Survivor has become one of Griffin's best-selling protective case ever since it debuted a couple of years ago. Griffin continues to lead the way where the protective case industry is concerned by rolling out the Survivor + Catalyst Waterproof Case for iPhone 5, although you will need to trade $79.99 to bring one of these bad boys home. Specially designed and built for freedom in and around water, the Survivor + Catalyst Waterproof Case is able to go whenever and wherever adventure beckons. This particular waterproof case is 9.8 feet deep (3 meters) and has been drop-tested to 6.6 feet (2 meters), while at the same time delivering full access to all of the iPhone's features. It is also ultra-rugged and waterproof, ensuring that the iPhone 5 remains well protected from the elements without having to sacrifice the ability to photograph, video, take calls, listen to audio and even plug in to recharge the iPhone battery while being protected. This is made possible thanks to button covers, while its crystal clear housing enables users to showcase their iPhone in addition to having them visually inspect the main o-ring seal for reliable waterproof protection. Any takers? It ought to arrive later this month for those who are interested. 8 Ways to Simplify the Pursuit of Happiness
Posted: 07 Jan 2013 07:56 AM PST
8 Ways to Simplify the Pursuit of Happiness Posted: 06 Jan 2013 08:12 PM PST  There are specific disciplines and ways of seeing the world that you have to understand before you can awaken to a simpler, happier life. Sometimes we make life more complicated than it is. We attach our happiness to achievement and then look for it in all the wrong ways and in all the wrong places. Of course, you don't have to live like this. If you feel like you are, it's time to simplify things. It's time to clear the air and get back to the basics. Simplifying your pursuit of happiness is not seeing how little you can get by with – that's poverty – but how efficiently you can put first things first, and use your time accordingly to pursue the things that make a difference and mean the most to you. Here are eight ways to do just that: Reminder: We just released our new ebook 1,000+ Little Things Happy, Successful People Do Differently. It makes a perfect starter kit for the new year. Click here to find out more. 1. Lose yourself in something that moves you. To truly flourish in life you have to let go a little, lose yourself in the moment and become fused with other people, experiences, and tasks. This happens sometimes when you are engrossed in a challenge, or when the artist inside you becomes one with the creative task at hand. It happens sometimes while you're playing sports, or listening to music, or lost in a good book, or when you feel completely enveloped by another's love. And it happens most when you emotionally connect with someone who shares your visions. In other words, long-term happiness isn't just about conscious achievement; it's also about the unconscious part of your mind naturally intertwining with the ideas, passions, work, people, songs, and stories that move you. Read The How of Happiness . 2. Know what you want and commit to it. The words 'aware' and 'commit' are so powerful. Make a Plan {31 Days to Your Goal}
Posted: 07 Jan 2013 07:54 AM PST
Make a Plan {31 Days to Your Goal} Posted: 07 Jan 2013 06:01 AM PST If you’re just joining us, be sure to start at the beginning of the 31 Days to Your Goal series! Once you’ve decided on your goal and set milestones, it’s time to make a plan to actually make it happen. I’m not a fan of spending a lot of money on things like exercise equipment or organizing solutions before you start to make progress on your goal, but I am a fan of gathering what you need, making appointments with yourself and setting yourself up for success in general. To start, ask yourself these questions: - Do you need to schedule appointments with yourself? (Time to exercise, project time, bed time, etc.)
- What supplies do you need to pursue your goal? (Exercise clothes, a journal, recipes, etc.)
- Do you need to rearrange or reorganize an area of your home? (Reading corner, healthy snack drawer, etc.)
- Do you have a way to track your progress? (A chart, calendar, checklist, etc.)
Little things like not knowing where your tennis shoes are when it’s time to exercise or not having a comfortable place to read can actually be fairly big mental obstacles to pursuing a new goal (“Oh, forget it — I’ll just do it later!”), so taking the time to think through those obstacles ahead of time — and to address them as they pop up — is an important part of preparing yourself for success. Remember, this doesn’t mean you need to invest in new exercise clothes or a collection of fancy cookbooks. You can do this without spending a lot of money by designating an old pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt as your exercise clothes or printing recipes from the internet. I’m not sure why our natural inclination is to buy something new to pursue a new goal, but it’s actually a lot more effective to make do with what you have and use those purchases as a reward than it is to go out and spend a lot of money upfront! What do you need to do to make it easier to pursue your goal? | Mandi Ehman is the founder and publisher behind Life Your Way and the co-author of All in Good Time, as well as a wife and the homeschooling mom to four beautiful girls. Yesterday we chose our goal for this month, but today, we’re going to break it down even further. Milestones are an important way to track your progress and avoid being overwhelmed by a big goal, so let’s talk about what you need to get done this week to meet your goal for the month. If your goal is simply to change or create a habit this month, then this exercise will look a little different than if your goal is to complete a project, but it’s important to break it down into milestones either way. What can you do this week to stay on track for the month? We have a little less than four weeks to go, so keep that in mind as you’re calculating your milestones. If you’re committing to exercise a certain number of days per week, which days this week will you exercise? Is that realistic for your schedule? If you’re working on a project, what do you need to get done to be on track? What else could you get done to be ahead? If you’re focusing on something less tangible, like an attitude or a habit, how can you prepare for this coming week? What challenges do you see? While you want to keep your goal for the month in mind, let’s break it down further and focus just on this week for now; there will be plenty of time to worry about the rest of the month later on! How can you break your goal for this month down into further milestones? | Mandi Ehman is the founder and publisher behind Life Your Way and the co-author of All in Good Time, as well as a wife and the homeschooling mom to four beautiful girls. Frivolous Complexity
Posted: 07 Jan 2013 07:36 AM PST
Frivolous Complexity Posted: 07 Jan 2013 03:00 AM PST Aaaargh. Don't get me started on complexity; don't get me started on "Stuff". Everybody wants to be successful. The bad news is, we are trained by society to associate success with "Stuff". Not just in the material sense (fancy cars, big houses, trophy wives, expensive mistresses, hot tubs, designer furniture, designer clothing, designer kitchens with Italian marble floors, fine wines, art collections etc), but also "Stuff to do": Dinner parties, ladies' luncheons, social climbing, networking, cocktail parties, second homes, community involvement, political activisim, PTA, Soccer Mom'ing, complicated love affairs that go nowhere, unsuitable daillances, social intrigues, obsessive gossiping, cooking classes, yoga classes, pottery classes, creative writing classes, tennis lessons, tango lessons, poker games, theatre, symphonies, art openings, magazine launch parties, opera, epicurian delights, horse breeding, ethnic restaurants, wife swapping, cult joining, celebrity worshipping, name-dropping, online forums, online rants, online dating, Instagramming, Twittering, Facebooking, blogging, cool hunting, culture-vulturing, Summers in Tuscany, Autumns in New York, Winters in Colorado, weekends in San Francisco… a totally full schedule, jam-packed with "Stuff", all day long. And we don't just stop there! Because we now need our total, never-ending "Stuff" fix, it's no longer enough to have our personal lives crammed with "Stuff", we need to cram it into our professional lives, as well: More product features, more product upgrades, more marketing campaigns, more advertising campaigns, more junk mail, more focus groups, more endless meetings that start at 7am for no reason, more memos, more mission statements, more white papers, more working weekends, more brainstorming sessions, more blue-sky thinking, more team-building exercises, more PowerPoint slides, more sharp-dressing employees with fancy job titles, more visually-pleasing personal assistants, more prestigious office addresses, more buzzwords, more catchphrases, more infographics, more international conference calls, more office politics, more hysterical emails sent at 2.am. Stuff, stuff, stuff… Which is kinda strange, considering the most successful and happy people I know generally don't live that way. The most successful and happy people I know are very good at ruthlessly editing out "Stuff" from their lives. They tend to live calmly and quietly, like a New England pond on an early morning in August. Leaving only time for the important "Stuff"… | Starting points Posted: 06 Jan 2013 10:26 AM PST With the New Year just beginning, I was reminded of this cartoon from two years ago, one of my personal favorites, one that carries A LOT of personal meaning for me. It got some water spilled on it; you can just see the damage in the photo. Anybody who's an artist or an entrepreneur will eventually ask themselves the question, "Well, when do I arrive?" When will I be successful or rich or secure or vindicated or allowed to relax etc. That moment never comes. There will always be something left to do, something unfinished, some itch still needing scratched. And Thank God for that– as Archimedes pointed out, life is a river. What we can learn from psychopaths Posted: 07 Jan 2013 05:34 AM PST Scientific American excerpts a chapter from Kevin Dutton's book The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us About Success, describing a visit to a high-security ward at Broadmoor Hospital in England, seeking insight into the positive aspect of a psychopathic mindset: Leslie's pragmatic endorsement of the principles and practices of what might otherwise be described as mindfulness is typical of the psychopath. A psychopath's rapacious proclivity to live in the moment, to "give tomorrow the slip and take today on a joyride" (as Larry, rather whimsically, puts it), is well documented—and at times can be stupendously beneficial. In fact, anchoring your thoughts unswervingly in the present is a discipline that psychopathy and spiritual enlightenment have in common. Clinical psychologist Mark Williams of the University of Oxford, for example, incorporates this principle of centering in his mindfulness-based cognitive-behavior therapy program for sufferers of anxiety and depression. "Feeling good is an emergency for me," Danny had commented as he'd slammed in his fourth goal for Chelsea on the Wii. Living in the moment, for him and many psychopaths, takes on a kind of urgency. "I like to ride the roller coaster of life, spin the roulette wheel of fortune, to terminal possibility." A desire to feel good in the here and now, shrugging off the future, can be taken to an extreme, of course. But it's a goal we could all perhaps do with taking onboard just a little bit more in our lives. Wisdom from Psychopaths? The DI Opposition
Posted: 07 Jan 2013 07:30 AM PST
The DI Opposition Posted: 06 Jan 2013 03:42 PM PST Another pile-on story; this time on David Heinemeier Hansson's Dependency injection is not a virtue. I agree with every word DHH writes here, but I think I have a better example. Tl;dr: Statically-typed languages can make unit testing hard, so People adopt dependency injection to work around this, and In a sort of Stockholm-syndrome effect, people argue that DI is A Good Thing and over-use it, to harmful effect. Another Example DHH's example is slick, but the publish! method includes enough deep-Ruby idioms that I bet it's opaque to a lot of perfectly smart developers who think in Java or C# or ObjC or whatever. Let's do a more meat-&-potatoes example: Unit testing a basic HTTP call. The context is my dinky little google-id-token gem (where "gem" is Ruby for a standard library package). To validate a Google ID Token, you have to fetch Google's OAuth 2 public keys and check the digital signature. So your unit tests obviously have to check the cases where the key retrieval works and doesn't work. If you were a Java programmer you'd probably type something like mock httpurlconnection or unit test httpurlconnection into Google. Frankly, the answers are not that great, and probably DI is in your future. I'm not going to display the Ruby code from my refresh_certs method, it's a straightforward call to the Net::HTTP library. So I typed ruby unit test net::http into Google, and there were a lot of different options; a variety of general-purpose mocking tools (that don't require you to change your app source), but for some reason I decided to use fakeweb (which doesn't require you to change your app source). Here's a chunk of my test code: it 'should complain if unable to fetch Google tokens' do FakeWeb::register_uri(:get, CERTS_URI, :status => ["404", "Not found"], :body => 'Ouch!') t = GoogleIDToken::Validator.new t.check('whatever', 'whatever').should == nil t.problem.should =~ /Unable to retrieve.*keys/ end it 'should successfully validate a good token against good certs' do FakeWeb::register_uri(:get, CERTS_URI, :status => ["200", "Success"], :body => @certs_body) jwt = @validator.check(@good_token, @token_aud, @token_cid) jwt.should_not == nil jwt['aud'].should == @token_aud jwt['cid'].should == @token_cid end The Dependency-Injection Big Picture DI, like Wikipedia says, "allows removing hard-coded dependencies and making it possible to change them, whether at run-time or compile-time". Surely that has to be a good thing, right? Since the solution to every problem in Computer Science is another level of indirection, right? Obviously, if you have to have DI to have unit testing, then you have to have DI. But in practice, when I try to read application code based on DI frameworks like Guice or Spring, it feels like there's a whole lot of stuff between me and the business logic, and I have to understand it all to understand anything. When a veteran Java-head or Rubyist sees calls into well-known standard libraries, they instantly know a whole lot about what's going on; obfuscating them with factories and implementors and injectors and so on significantly impairs readability, and that's a big deal. One of the nicest things about Java is its huge repertoire of well-known well-documented battle-tested APIs for more or less anything; they add significantly not just to its capabilities, but its expressiveness and (especially) readability. Also, call me old-fashioned, but I think that, as far as statically-typed languages go, Java's "interface" mechanism offers just the right level of indirection, semantically: I don't care what it is, I care what it does. Too bad you have to pile DI on top of that. This is another reason why dynamically-typed languages are usually a better choice for implementing application programs. | You are subscribed to email updates from ongoing by Tim Bray To stop receiving these emails, you may unsubscribe now. | Email delivery powered by Google | Google Inc., 20 West Kinzie, Chicago IL USA 60610 |

NVIDIA Unveils GRID Servers, Tegra 4 SoC and Project SHIELD Mobile Gaming Device

NVIDIA Unveils GRID Servers, Tegra 4 SoC and Project SHIELD Mobile Gaming Device Posted: 07 Jan 2013 06:30 AM PST MojoKid writes "NVIDIA made some bold moves at their CES 2013 press conference and announced a couple of potentially game changing products. GeForce GRID is a cloud gaming solution. It allows PC game content to be run and rendered in the cloud and then streamed to any device that can run the GRID receiver utility, like a Smart TV, tablet, or a smartphone. GeForce GRID server architecture combines an NVIDIA-designed server packed with GPUs with NVIDIA-developed software and virtualization layer. A rack of 20 GRID servers was shown, powered by 240 GPUs, capable of 200 TFLOPS and roughly equivalent to the performance of 720 Xbox 360 consoles. The biggest news to come out of NVIDIA's press conference, however, had to do with Tegra 4. Not only was the next-gen SoC officially unveiled, but a new portable gaming device based on Tegra 4, dubbed Project SHIELD, was also demoed. NVIDIA's Tegra 4 builds upon the success of the Tegra 3 by incorporating updated ARM15-based CPU cores with 72 custom GeForce GPU cores, which offer up to 6x the performance of Tegra 3. The A15 cores used in Tegra 4 are up to 2.6x faster than the A9-class cores used in Tegra 3. As a companion to the Tegra 4, NVIDIA also took the wraps off of their new Icera i500 programmable 4G LTE modem processor. Icera i500 features 8 custom, programmable processor cores and is approximately 40% smaller than many fixed function modems. The biggest surprise to come out of NVIDIA's press conference was Project SHIELD, a Tegra 4-powered mobile gaming device running Android that's sure to put Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo on high alert. Project SHIELD offers a pure Android experience without any skinning or other customizations, save for the SHIELD app environment, that can play any Android game. Project SHIELD has the ability to stream PC games from a GeForce GTX-equipped PC as well. The device is shaped much like an Xbox 360 game controller, but features a 5", flip-out capacitive touch display with a 720P resolution. The device can also stream to an HD TV via HDMI or a WiDi-like wireless dongle. In fact, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang showed Project SHIELD playing a 4K video on an LG 4K TV." Some shareholders sued. Specifically, they claim that Novell favored Attachmate over other bidders, especially a 'Party C', and the judge, under Delaware's reasonable 'conceivability' standard, denied summary judgement with respect to the board and decided there will need to be a trial." But the new highway's most interesting feature is when the temperature drops below freezing, the road will automatically light up with snowflake indicators to warn drivers of icy conditions (video). 'One day I was sitting in my car in the Netherlands, and I was amazed by these roads we spend millions on but no one seems to care what they look like and how they behave,' says designer Daan Roosegaarde. 'I started imagining this Route 66 of the future where technology jumps out of the computer screen and becomes part of us.' The first few hundred meters of glow-in-the-dark, weather-indicating road will be installed in the province of Branbant in mid-2013, followed by priority induction lanes for electric vehicles, interactive lights that switch on as cars pass and wind-powered lights within the next five years. 'Research on smart transportation systems and smart roads has existed for over 30 years — call any transportation and infrastructure specialist and you'll find out yourself,' adds Emina Sendijarevick. 'What's lacking is the implementation of those innovations and making those innovations intuitive and valuable to the end-consumers — drivers.'" A common perception is that CES is the place where all the major technology companies launch their latest and greatest gadgets. But this is simply not the case. Let's look at 2012 as an example. Last year's most talked about consumer technology products (in no particular order) were: the iPhone 5, iPad 3, iPad mini, Microsoft Surface, Samsung Galaxy S3, Google Nexus 7, Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Wii U. How many were launched at CES 2012? None." It seemed so obvious in fact that nobody took time to check this assumption. Until a 15 year old student, Neil Ibata, working with his father at the astronomic observatory wanted to check it out. It turned out that dwarf galaxies tend to be placed on a plane around M31. The finding has been published in nature. Local press (especially in France) is ecstatic that a finding by a 15-year-old got published in Nature. How about a place to assemble rocket ships or a parachute-packing plant? Have we got a deal for you. The Orlando Sentinel reports that with the cleanup and wind-down of the shuttle program, NASA is quietly holding a going-out-of-business sale for the its space-shuttle facilities including Launch Pad 39A, where shuttles were launched; space in the Vehicle Assembly Building, the iconic 526-foot-tall structure first used to assemble Saturn V-Apollo rockets; the Orbiter Processing Facilities, essentially huge garages where the shuttles were maintained; Hangar N and its high-tech test equipment; the launch-control center; and various other buildings and chunks of undeveloped property. 'The facilities out here can't be in an abandoned state for long before they become unusable,' says Joyce Riquelme, NASA's director of KSC planning and development. 'So we're in a big push over the next few months to either have agreements for these facilities or not.' The process is mostly secret, because NASA has agreed to let bidders declare their proposals proprietary, keeping them out of the view of competitors and the public. Frank DiBello, thinks the most attractive facilities are those that can support launches that don't use the existing pads at KSC and adjacent Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. 'Anything that still has cleaning capabilities or satellite-processing capabilities, the parachute facility, the tile facility, the OPF, all three of them, they have real value to the next generation of space activity,' says Frank DiBello, President of Space Florida, an Independent Special District of the State of Florida, created to foster the growth and development of a sustainable and world-leading space industry in Florida. 'If the infrastructure helps you reach market, then it has value. If it doesn't, then it's just a building, it's just a launchpad, and nobody wants it.'" According to "a reliable source at the company" 2013 will be the year that "at least one of their very popular titles will see a release for Ubuntu Linux." From the article: "It's been a poorly-kept secret that Blizzard has a native Linux client of World of Warcraft. As recently as 2011, the World of Warcraft Linux client was still being maintained internally. The client has been around for years and done by their own developers as a form of testing for the popular MMORPG currently offered on Windows and Mac OS X. As for why they haven't released the client, it's come down to "targeting a specific version of the platform" with Linux being "unstandardized" due to the many different distributions. There's still some fundamental problems with gaming on Linux. With World of Warcraft working generally fine under Wine as well, the company is further unmotivated to officially support a Linux build of the game." 40+ of the Best WordPress eCommerce Themes Posted: 07 Jan 2013 04:38 AM PST While there are plenty of options available when choosing an eCommerce platform, the possibility of using WordPress for eCommerce has become more enticing in recent years due to continued development of plugins and themes. Today there is no shortage of quality themes that can be purchased, or in some cases downloaded for free, to use WordPress for powering an eCommerce website. One of the main benefits of having WordPress as an eCommerce option is that so many users and developers are already familiar with WordPress, so the learning curve can in some cases be shorter than with another platform. HTC 4Q Profit Falls 91% as Brand Falls Behind in Smartphone Wars Posted: 07 Jan 2013 06:20 AM PST HTC's losing streak continued on Monday as its fourth-quarter profit fell 91% thanks to poor sales in the U.S. market. The company posted a 4Q net profit of $34.4 million, its lowest since 2004, but still beating analysts' predictions of a $23 million net profit. HTC's third-quarter profit had also fallen 79%; this is the company's fifth consecutive quarter with lower profits. The company is suffering a reverse in fortune that began in Q4 2011. Prior to that, HTC had several quarters of strong growth and record profits. HTC's dwindling share of the smartphone market prompted the shortfall. The company's global share for the devices was 4% in the third quarter of 2012 vs. 10.3% for… Continue reading... The fork measures the intervals between bringing the fork from your plate to your mouth and back again, and then sends a gentle vibration your way when you're eating too fast. Two Essential Lessons I Learned in 2012
Posted: 06 Jan 2013 11:04 PM PST
Two Essential Lessons I Learned in 2012 Posted: 06 Jan 2013 06:59 PM PST In my previous post, I asked you to share the lessons you learned in 2012. Many of you participated, and the insights were wonderful. Thanks! Now, I'd like to share what I've learned. :) To be honest, 2012 was a transitional year for me. Outwardly, I didn't achieve much, but I gained many insights on the inside that I believe can shape my life for years to come. While there are others, here are two essential lessons I learned in 2012: 1. Clarify your WHY. A few months ago, I read Start With Why by Simon Sinek. The book discusses the importance of having a clear cause (which the author calls WHY). I have always had a cause in my mind, but reading the book sharpened it and renewed my commitment to it. Previously, my one-liner was, "Helping people live life to the fullest." In recent months, however, I shortened it to just three words: "Helping people grow." I chose to use the word "grow" because it encompasses my values. This short but meaningful statement makes my cause sharper. Of course, the real challenge is not to make the statement, but to live by it. I hope that this blog can become a medium for that. 2. Set clear deadlines. This is basic, I know, but I had a project in 2012 that I couldn't complete because I didn't set a clear deadline for it. As I wrote in my post about expanding personal capacity, you need to take on new challenges to expand your capacity. In 2012 I took on the challenge of writing an e-book. I finished the first draft in the first few months of the year, but then I got sidetracked by other projects. Last month, I went back to the e-book project and tried to finish it before New Year. I couldn't make it. Had I set a clear deadline, I probably would have finished it by now. *** Those are my two lessons from 2012. Now that we have learned all these lessons, let's make this year our best year ever! How to Reflow a Macbook Pro GPU

How to Reflow a Macbook Pro GPU Posted: 06 Jan 2013 06:14 PM PST Dane from Transistor Man had a Macbook Pro with a GPU that wasn’t working. The system would boot but the display output was dead. Similar to the Xbox 360 BGA problems there are some Macbook Pro computers that have experienced BGA solder issues. The big issue here is that BGA devices have the solder connections under the device itself. Dane used a heat gun and a variac to blow a measured amount of heat onto the device to reflow the solder in attempts to repair the bad connections. The actual remelting of the solder isn’t a quick application of heat as it is when you solder a through hole solder pad. To prevent thermal shock you need to slowly bring the part up to temperature using the typical temperature profile that is normally used to reflow parts. Read here How to Reflow a Macbook Pro GPU. | Name the Thing Contest – 216 Posted: 06 Jan 2013 08:02 AM PST The prize this week is a breadboard power supply. New Year, New Beginnings?! Robert Pattinson And Kristen Stewart Looking At Twilight Love Nest In Southwest London!

New Year, New Beginnings?! Robert Pattinson And Kristen Stewart Looking At Twilight Love Nest In Southwest London! Posted: 06 Jan 2013 09:01 PM PST We guess these two really have found the best way to put the difficult year of 2012 behind them is by STAYING across the pond! Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have SERIOUSLY put quite a bit of time, effort, and heartbreak into repairing their broken relationship after the Twilight actress cheated on her boyfriend and co-star with Snow White director Rupert Sanders, and have been said to be focusing the early months of 2013 on ensuring that they're both in for the long haul together! Well, it appears that the pair have quite enjoyed their New Year's holiday to the Isle of Wight so much that they're looking to re-establish their lives together in the United Kingdom this year...and have even found a luxury Victorian home in South West London to help do just that! A source explains: "Ever since Kristen's affair last year, Rob has realized just how much his friends and family in the UK mean to him. After spending more time here in recent months, Rob's decided he wants to split his time more between London and Los Angeles. He wants to put down roots in London and he's doing it with Kristen. He's told her that if she wants to make things work, she's going to have to accept that he wants to spend much more time in London. It's on the market for millions. Unlike the others they saw, this is suited to their tastes and needs very little work. With their hectic filming schedules they want somewhere they can live in straight away and it has a beautiful garden too. They both fell in love with the property as soon as they saw it. They decided to base themselves in Richmond, South West London, so Rob can be close to his parents' home in Barnes. Rob knows the area as he attended Tower House, a prep school near Richmond Park. So his dad Richard put him in touch with an estate agent who lined up appointments. Kristen's really excited about the prospect of spending more time in the UK and has been saying how she'd love to star in a West End show." WOW! Guess she REALLY is behind a full UK move then! Good for them! We can't blame Rob for assessing what's important to him after such a difficult year, and it makes sense that it would include spending more time being closer to his family! And we couldn't be more thrilled that Kristen supports him in that, and wants to be a part of it, as well! Here's hoping that this new chapter in your lives brings all the happiness you hope from it! Posted: 06 Jan 2013 02:28 PM PST It's been a while since American Idol has launched a real successful recording artist, but they've done just that with Phillip Phillips! His song Home is a big hit and... his album is damn good! We gotta give props to Phillips and those that made the record with him! In a smart move, they decided not to chase radio and instead focused on making great music. Like the song Gone Gone Gone, which we are LOVING and hope will be his next single. It's very Mumford & Sons meets Dave Matthews Band - and that's not a bad thing at all! Check out Gone Gone Gone above! Posted: 06 Jan 2013 01:33 PM PST No foul, even though there was some SERIOUS harm inflicted! Physically, anyway! We've already learned that Gabriel Aubry will not be facing any criminal charges whatsoever for his involvement in the Thanksgiving day brawl which left he and ex Halle Berry's new fiance Olivier Martinez in the hospital after the pair resolved their issues via separate mediation sessions with the El Lay District Attorney! However, there WAS a possibility that as a result of the incident, the Canadian model could be ordered into anger management classes! But despite having a history of such requirements, he's been officially let off the hook! A source explains: "The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office could have ordered Gabe to attend anger management classes, even though he wasn't officially charged with any crimes. Gabe attended an informal office hearing, and it was determined that there was absolutely no need for him to enroll in any sort of anger management classes or counseling. Gabe is just thankful to put this ordeal behind him and focus on being Nahla's father." We agree whole-heartedly! While he may had issues with anger in the past, it DEFINITELY seems at least in this scenario, it took two to tango! Here's hoping that he and Halle can leave whatever unresolved issues they have back in 2012, and keep their top priority the emotional happiness and safety of their child in the future! [Image via WENN.] | SMG Is Switching Gears! Attached To COMEDY Pilot About Motherhood! Posted: 06 Jan 2013 01:03 PM PST Her last series was cancelled well-before its time, so we're glad to see her once again getting back on the horse so quickly! Sarah Michelle Gellar has been focusing on motherhood since the demise of The CW's Ringer, which has no doubt influenced the direction of her latest career move...as she's said to have signed on to a new TV show centered around just that! According to reports, the actress will be appearing in a new half-hour comedy pilot from 20th Century Fox TV, which will focus on the lives of parents when their children are out of the house! As it's still in the development phase, there's no news yet on which network this one will land, but with her talents, as well as Don't Trust the B-tch in Apartment 23's David Hemingson and Love and Other Drugs' Margaret Riley serving as executive producers, we're confident that this one might have a better chance at sticking with viewers! Fingers crossed, anyway! Gurl deserves some steady work, wouldn't you say?! What do U think? Are U excited about the prospect of SMG back on small screens?! Posted: 06 Jan 2013 12:34 PM PST While it was devastating to see the boy-band super-group NKOTBSB officially disband back in August, we've been DELIGHTED to see the Backstreet Boys reunite in their original form for all sorts of holiday goodness! And NOW...it appears that New Kids On the Block will be doing very much the same on an even LARGER scale! According to Donnie Wahlberg, you can expect to see him reunited with Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood, and Jordan and Jonathan Knight VERY soon! We're talking END-OF-THE-MONTH soon, folks! That's right! Not only will they be announcing a brand new 2013 tour on January 22nd, but they will have a NEW SINGLE dropping around that time...AND an all-new album to compliment it by sometime in March! OH! We can HARDLY contain our excitement over all of this wonderful news! You're still our #1 for a reason! Keep on showing all of these new boy-bands how it's DONE, guys! What do U think?? Because that's EXACTLY what is happening to us right now! And we couldn't be MORE EFFING THRILLED! With a new album on its way and pretty much the best Twitter page of all time, Cher has made no secret of her plans to make 2013 her bitch, but apparently, she's ready to remind the world that she pulls double duty like no one else...and is set to return to the small screen 40 years after The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour premiered by developing a new pilot for Logo! According to new reports, she has signed a development deal with the LGBT-oriented network alongside comedian Ron Zimmerman for a series set in early 1960s Hollywood...and the icon very well may have an on-screen role! Senior VP of original programming Brent Zacky explains: "We read some of the stuff that Cher and Ron had written and it was really terrific. We came up with an idea set in Hollywood in the early '60s and we're very excited to see how we get through the process. The deal is brand-new and we're just getting started on the project. We're very carefully and hopefully diligently taking a few shots in this arena and we'll see how it pans out. We're certainly excited to be in business with an icon like Cher and Ron, who is a terrific writer." YES! YES! YES! We LOVE all of the scripted originals that Logo has been slowly creating, and we think this could be a HUGE ratings-grabbing addition to their roster! And now that gurlfriend is joining the family, could we perhaps get our very own Cher-centric reality show? Perhaps an Odd Couple-esque pairing with she and our equally beloved Kathy Griffin?! Hey! Miracles are happening, so why not keep on daring to dream?! What do U think?? Would U watch Cher on a brand new series?! New Year’s Resolutions – 7 Tips to Get Them Right!

New Year’s Resolutions – 7 Tips to Get Them Right! Posted: 05 Jan 2013 09:17 PM PST May all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions. Joey Adams New Year's resolutions are made to be broken. But are we missing out on a trick? Could it be that it's not the idea of resolutions that doesn't work, but maybe the way we're setting them needs a tweak? When trying to change there are small things we can do to increase our chance of success. Here are some that my clients and I have found useful. I hope they help you create a remarkable year in 2013. 1. Get picky. I used to make long lists of things I would start in the New Year. Come January 2nd I would struggle to remember what these were, let alone get them done. Having too much to focus on is distracting. Besides, when our will power starts to wobble the sheer length of our list can make us give up. Consider picking 1 single resolution this year. When I tried this I felt like I was aiming low. My resolution was to start running for 25 minutes, 3 times a week within 3 months. This is the one resolution I've ever kept. (Besides, we can always set another resolution 3 months down the line) What change will have the most impact on your life? 2. It's all in the name. I remember a client having a real aversion to the word 'goal'. She said it made her quest seem boring, difficult and unobtainable. This got me thinking about the meaning we attach to words and now I encourage my clients to come up with their own word to define what they want to achieve. Some use project others use adventure or quest. My all time favorite is 'promise'. We've been brought up to keep our promises and so, at a sub-conscious level, renaming our resolution as a promise can increase our chances of sticking to it. Try it out, see how it feels for you. 3. Make it clear. Our minds are fussy types. They need clarity and specifics to get motivated. The eagle eyed may have noticed that earlier I didn't just talk about running, I talked about running for 25 minutes, 3 times a week within 3 months. For the more fluid and spontaneous among us this might seem a little pedantic but it's absolutely crucial in getting us motivated to take action. To get clear ask yourself: What have you promised yourself? By when do you want to achieve it? How will you and others know that you've achieved it? 4. Find the reason why. Why have you chosen this promise? How will it change your life? How will it affect those around you? Even with the best-laid plans unless we see the point of doing something we'll never stick to it. If you want to keep going even when your promise is hard to stick to, find the reason why. Write it down or create a picture. Do anything that will remind you of this reason because when you feel like giving up this is what will help you push on. 5. Double your chances of success. One proven method for getting us to take action is to get someone else involved. They can either join you or hold you accountable for the actions you plan on taking. For example psychologists have found that people who enrolled a buddy when trying to lose weight were more likely to shift the pounds and stick to their new diet. In the same way, sharing your project with someone can help give you that extra push when you need it. The key thing to keep in mind is to choose someone who will support you, encourage you and show that they believe in you. Who is trying to achieve something similar? Who wants to see you succeed? 6. Examine your thinking. Here's a slightly peculiar fact about me. Up until this year I thought that people who exercised were boring. I equated fitness with discipline, discipline with sticking to the rules and that with boring. I was almost proud of the fact that I was unfit because in my twisted thinking that meant that I was not boring and therefore fun. (I know) The problem was that I had no idea that all this madness was going on in my head until I stopped to explore my thoughts about exercising. Once I discovered the crazy thinking I worked on proving to my mind that fit did not mean boring. This small change made it a LOT easier to get out of the house and go for a run. Take some time and explore your thoughts around your promise. What thinking is holding you back? Where's the evidence for it? What examples can you find to disprove that thinking? Find more about this here. 7. Reward and Celebrate. When these tips help you stick to your promise, take the time to give yourself a pat on the back and celebrate the fact that you've pushed through. Treat yourself with a reward. Not only will it feel great but it will get your mind to focus on the fact that you've got will power, you DO get things done. And when that becomes part of your identity, well dear reader, a whole new world of possibilities opens up right at your feet. This year I promise to meditate daily for 15 minutes. What's your promise? —- Karen is a psychologist and coach. Some Thoughts About Your Calendar and Sunday Night
Posted: 06 Jan 2013 07:20 PM PST
Some Thoughts About Your Calendar and Sunday Night Posted: 06 Jan 2013 04:35 PM PST Some Thoughts About Your Calendar and Sunday Night is a post from: The Sales Blog | S. Anthony Iannarino If your calendar for the week is essentially empty at this point on a Sunday night, you’re prepared to be reactive instead of proactive this week. Instead of working on your highest priorities, other people’s highest priorities are going to be working on you. Instead of working on what matters most, you’re going to end up distracted by nonsense and trivialities. If your calendar for the week has huge blank spaces all over the week on Sunday night, it's unlikely that you’re prepared to make the investments in "who matters" most. It's unlikely that you will spend time with your most important clients, and it is equally unlikely that you’re going to spend time with the most important members of your team. If they’re not on your calendar now, you’re not treating them like they are a priority. If you have not blocked off time to be proactive when it comes to prospecting and nurturing, it isn’t likely that you’re going to do that work this week. If I looked at last week’s calendar I imagine I would not find blocked off time for prospecting or nurturing there either. Prospecting never needs to be done with any urgency but it always needs to be urgently done. Sunday night is the night to plan. Investing an hour on Sunday night to map out your weekly priorities, to get them on your calendar, and to commit to keeping the promises you make to yourself will massively increase your productivity throughout the week. It's true that things are going to come up. Sure there are going to be emergencies that require your attention. You can work around those. By having your calendar mapped out in advance you can deal with what comes up and then quickly get back on task. Spend an hour on Sunday night preparing for the week ahead. Get what’s important on your calendar, and get who is important on your calendar. Don’t let the world impose its priorities on you. Instead make sure you work on your highest priorities. Questions Do you plan your week in advance? When you make sure that you’ve got all your priorities for the week on your calendar and scheduled? Honestly, how much of your time is spent working on your highest priorities instead of someone else’s highest priorities for you? Have you scheduled time to prospect in nurture your dream clients? Do you have committed, scheduled time with your most important clients and dream clients? | You are subscribed to email updates from S.
