When using the mouse wheel to scroll vertically Scite will occasionally scroll the text horizontally which can be annoying. What is causing this? Is it Windows, the mouse driver, how Scite/Scintilla respond to the mouse messages? How can it be fixed? I would prefer to never scroll horizontally when using the mouse wheel to scroll.

I haven't seen this. Perhaps with some more investigation you could
discover under what circumstances this occurs.

Just trying to offer a hint: I have some similar problems when I use
Firefox (well, actually called Iceweasel on Debian). Sometimes when
I'm trying to do one thing with the mouse (typically click on a link),
the link is not selected but one of two other things happen:

* either Firefox decides I wanted to save the contents of the link,
* or, Firefox gets a strange cursor and decides that I wanted to grab
some part of the graphic images and move it around on the screen

Also, sometimes when I go to the KDE toolbar at the top of the page to
select an item, KDE decides that I was trying to tell it to move the
toolbar to the bottom of the screen.

I suspect my problem is that I am making slight incorrect movements with
the mouse--I might jiggle the mouse a little or something like that. I
do find that I tend to hold the mouse at a slight angle so that my
vertical and horizontal movements are not at right angles to the mouse
body, but instead slightly skewed.

That might be part of the problem, but I also fault Firefox and KDE,
somehow they shouldn't be that touchy.

I suspect that is not the problem with Scintilla, but you never know.

BTW: I've had trouble finding a good way to report the problem--that
includes: a good place to report the problem, finding a way to make it
repeatable, finding good ways to describe the problem, and, then for
KDE, I'm still using version 3.5 and the developers are not very
interested in problems with older versions.

I have seen that in some applications, but I cannot reproduce that in SciTE on WinXP.
IIRC, sometime applications scroll horizontally with mouse wheel when there is no vertical
scroll bar (small number of lines) and wide content (horizontal scrollbar).
Or something like that...

Thanks for the help. I figured it out. I had been using KatMouse to
allow scrolling text in windows without the window having focus -
which is a really nice capability. Turning KatMouse off for SciTE
fixed the issue. I then switched to WizMouse which has a checkbox for
"Enable mouse wheel support for applications without mouse wheel
support". When checked, SciTE (but not Notepad++, Notepad, etc.) does
the horizontal scroll. This only happens when the horizontal scroll
bar is present in SciTE. Unchecking that option in WizMouse allows me
to use WizMouse with SciTE.
