I think we still need to address two things:

1. Most of the dates mentioned are a bit old. See if there are more
recent awards and Ruby projects we can mention.

2. We may want to address the perception that Ruby is dead. Do we have
some industry stats/github stats/employment stats we can use? Add
that to the new releases of Ruby and RoR.

Please amend the wiki! Also, if you have good ideas for projects, add
them to the ideas page.

Anyone want to write a blog about Daru? Or Udit, could you do a short
blog on tensors? We have a month to add it before anyone looks.

Hi,

I tried to get the current octopress code but it's based on octopress which is too old and does not work with current version of ruby. I'm porting the website to octopress 3.0 and should be complete in 1-2 days.

Tomorrow is the org deadline. I think the papers are in, so that is
good. The GSoC team will evaluate pretty soon. When I look at the main
SciRuby website first thing that strikes me is that the 'Recent posts'
blogs are dated. We should add one, or remove that list.

Do we have a sciruby twitter feed? Maybe add some news items on the
list and call it news instead of blogs?

This is one of the main things GSoC looks at when choosing orgs. They
accentuate that projects should be doable in 180 hours. I think we
should state that explicitly.

I think we are making great progress ramping up for GSoC. Please take
another look at the Ideas page. Projects with one mentor should add a
co-mentor! That is to have a safety if the mentor has some problem.
Org-admins can be co-mentors.

We have an alternative idea. SciRuby still has funds, so we could give
$2,000 stipend for a project. Encourage them to write a proposal and
do some early commit(s) to the project and we can make it a formal
SciRuby stipend they can add to their CV. We gain by getting some work
done and showing that on the website as 2-3 BLOGs or so.

How does that sound?

Main thing is that a talented student finds a willing project and
mentor. We can approve the project as a group here. If we get multiple
projects like this in a year we can also do give a SciRuby award for
the best one.

So the procedure for getting a stipend is:

1. Write a project proposal as a markdown doc in your public project repo (applicant + mentor)
2. Have a few code commits by applicant to the project (or SciRuby general)
3. Mentor applies for stipend through the mailing list here
4. SciRuby community approves project

We are carefully not setting any further constraints. Note that
applicant does not have to be a student(!). Also there is no time
constraint, though it is considered a learning exercise and I would
aim for 2-3 months as a mentor to get a significant contribution. As
a target:

5. Mentor approves project results
6. At least 2 BLOGs need to be produced for the SciRuby website (half
way and at the end) by applicant + mentor.
7. Payment to applicant will most likely be handled through Payoneer
where we have an account.

Finally, in case of conflict between applicant and mentor the current
SciRuby admins will act as arbiters. Their word is final. We should
also have a Code-of-Conduct. We'll take the one on our GSoC
application.

If we all like this idea we'll update the website with this
information.
