Hi all,

GSoC 2020 is approaching!

Lets discuss about the project ideas. As Pjotr had already suggested, we should be looking beyond Ruby.

I am in favor of NumRuby and Ruby-sparse as a project idea this year. And a GWAS project in Python/Ruby/Dlang.

We would also be needing an org-admin this year. I think Shekhar/Sameer can be admins this year. I would be happy to help
as a mentor.

What are your ideas ?

Regards,
Prasun

I am also happy to be a mentor again.

How about morphing SciRuby into a more general 'Scientific computing
for programming languages' organization? That would include Ruby as a
first target, but I think we can have a wider appeal and get other
languages to contribute. Maybe it is too short day this year, but I
would definitely like to aim for that. Essentially serve those
languages that do not get into GSoC by creating libraries that can be
called through FFIs.

What existing orgs in GSoC would compete with that idea?

They seem to work with multiple languages.

Yeah, they even have Julia.

Hmmm. I think joining them is not really advantageous as long as we
get into GSoC.

Anyone any ideas? What I want to achieve is that we have a broader
support base. Ruby is great, but also dwindling. So, small languages
such as Racket, D etc. may be combined into one org.

How about Small languages for Science?

Bit in vein of the devroom we are organizing at FOSDEM:

I am thinking we should stick to SciRuby right now as a mentoring org.
It is likely, at some point, we don't get into GSoC. That is a good
time to change tack.

How about we add projects to make Ruby ready for IoT devices? One such project is to develop microRuby framework for micro-controller devices like esp32, arduino etc. Same thing has been done with Python. There's an equivalent of Python by the name microPython which is very popular as it makes programming these low level devices fun and easy.

Can someone like me that doesn't have a data scientist background contribute to the project ? My background is Ruby Developer.

Yes, you can contribute. Not everyone is a data scientist here and that's not a requirement.
