Hi Alish, Udit,

I hope you are doing well. We all know GSoC 2020 Org application is opened and we should now discuss/propose ideas/enhancements we want to do in the current projects.

As we discussed in last year's meetings - we should not leave our projects inactive. It should be passed to other contributors to maintain if we are not available.

It would great if you guys can share your TODOs or any new ideas that can be implemented this year GSoC.
Let us know if any of you want to be a mentor for any project this year GSoC.

I have created the wiki page for the GSoC 2020 ideas here. Some contents are from previous years' ideas for a few projects.

Feel free to update it or add your new ideas after discussing in this thread.

Cheers,

Hi Shekhar,

For NumRuby we can do following:

* Add MKL support.
* Add serialization support.
* Slicing to make use of view instead of copying data.
* Fix broadcasting.
* Improve file structure. Some files are quite huge, need to split them.
* Implement random engine.
* Add image processing support.

For Ruby-Sparse, the possible work can be found at https://github.com/Uditgulati/blog/wiki/Ruby-Grant-2019-proposal.

Regards,
Udit

Hello Shekhar,

For Rubyplot, I am currently working on it as a part of Ruby Grant. For GSoC, I think these advancements can be set up as a project:

* Adding 3D plotting
* Adding interactive plotting
* Adding image processing functionality

Some of the details for these can be found in my Ruby Grant proposal: https://github.com/alishdipani/rubyplot/wiki/Ruby-Grant-2019-Proposal

Warm Regards,
Alish Dipani

Dear Shekhar,

Sure, I will add the details. I will need Sameer's help too.
Also, can we add my and Udit's proposal to this list (https://github.com/SciRuby/sciruby/wiki/Successful-GSOC-proposals)?

Warm Regards,
Alish Dipani

Can we include a project for building a microRuby framework for IoT? mRuby (microRuby) will be basically like Ruby but it can also work on small devices with limited resources (eg, arduino, esp32, etc). Its similar to microPython. I don't know if this project idea falls under the scope of SciRuby, that's why discussing it here before adding it to ideas page.

If this project idea is fine, then I know 2 people who are currently working on mRuby framework. They are Carson McDonald & Yamamoto Masaya. I contacted them on email and they seem happy to mentor the project if any student gets selected.

What do you think?

Hi Lokesh,

Sorry for the delay response! It is looking interesting.

Unfortunately, we missed the Org application submission. But I think we can carry forward your idea for the next year GSoC. Till then feel free to open new thread in group for the discussion and update the idea page.

Regards,
Shekhar
