This is something we discussed a lot, and people were generally in
favor of. We hadn't thought of twitter, but that's a good idea. (We
had discussed google+ and facebook.)
I'll mention also some concerns about them, though:
1. It clutters the interface with many more buttons (e.g. go to
http://arxiv.org/abs/1303.5124 and look at all the buttons under the
"bookmark" heading). And if I want to Like a paper I now click
"scite" and then also +1 it on google+, or Like it on facebook or
tweet a link to it, or some combination of the above. It risks
presenting the user with too many choices.
2. It also risks fragmenting the discussion so that people are
discussing papers in various walled gardens, although to some extent
this can be mitigated by having scirate show discussions of the paper
on twitter, or even g+/fb when those are public.
These are surmountable, but because we hadn't figured out how to deal
with them, we put off the issue. However, twitter might be an ideal
place to start, perhaps if we introduce the convention of writing
#1303.5124 (for example) to denote a discussion of that paper.
Shall we bring these points up on the larger scirate list?
By the way, my informal arxiv search polling has revealed that people
often do the quick search box and/or a google search, and only if htat
doesn't work, do they try the advanced search. google has some
things, like autocomplete, that we'll never be able to match. But I
bet the quick search would meet a lot of the demand.
