I sketched something to try to have an actual policy for moderating SciRate comments. See below. This is just to start a discussion... I hope that everyone will have some useful suggestions for how to improve this draft. But I just thought it was important to have some kind of policy in writing so that people aren't totally perplexed when their comments are altered by the moderators.

SciRate Comment Moderation Policy

SciRate comments are moderated according to guidelines. The moderators reserve the right to edit or delete comments that they feel do not follow these guidelines.

The main goal of the moderation policy is simply to keep a high quality of scientific discourse.

We are happy to have some amount of jovial or lighthearted comments, but these will typically be removed from the front-page feed (though typically not deleted). Sometimes, comments will be lightly edited to correct for typos or grammar mistakes, or for mathematics that isn’t typesetting correctly in MathJax. Spam comments, slanderous or insulting comments, and comments judged to be crackpot will be deleted.

I think it's fine, my only thought is: When a post is edited, is it visible somehow? I think that would be good; so everyone can see that it was edited (though not necessarily what was changed.)

There's an old issue somewhere about keeping the edit history of comments. I believe the usual thing to do in this case is just show a name/timestamp for the last edit e.g. "Noon Silk edited this comment 4 hours ago"
