Environmental Data-Mining Scientist

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and its Institute of
Meteorology and Climate Research/Atmospheric Environmental Research
(KIT/IMK-IFU) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, invites applications for a
Environmental Data-Mining Scientist.
Research at KIT/IMK-IFU focuses on biosphere-hydrosphere-atmosphere
interactions in complex terrain and climate change impacts on the water
cycle and the biosphere on regional wide range of scales. To support
this research, we conduct long-term measurements of (e.g.) fluxes of
energy, water and other greenhouse gases in several ecosystems within
the networks of TERENO (Terrestrial Environmental Observatory Network)
and ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System), as well as intensive
field campaigns nationally and internationally.

We seek a staff scientist to
• manage and further develop a data base of environmental measurements
(measured biophysical/chemical variables, BADMs) linked to national and
international networks (e.g. TERENO, ICOS, FLUXNET)
• develop data-mining tools in collaboration with other scientists,
e.g., to extract aggregated information, for quality control, or for
data handling
• conduct data-driven research in the field of
biosphere-hydrosphere-atmosphere interactions (including, e.g., model
performance assessments against suitable observational data)

The appointee will be affiliated with the KIT/IMK-IFU working group
“Transport processes in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer” (Dr. Matthias
Mauder), but the work will be in close collaboration with all project
groups in the institute, as well as our partners in TERENO and ICOS.
Requirements
As successful applicant, you have documented knowledge in data base
programming and scripting languages for data analysis, such as R or
Python. You should have several years of experience in environmental
research, with a Ph.D. in environmental sciences, eco-meteorology,
hydrology, remote sensing or a related field. In cases of exceptional
experience and qualifications, candidates with a Master’s degree or
equivalent may also be considered. The appointee must have excellent
oral and writing skills in English.

We offer a vibrant and friendly, inter-disciplinary international research
environment in the beautiful mountain- environment of
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. The salary will be equivalent to the
German public service scale, depending on qualifications and experience.
The appointment will be for 2 years initially, with an option for
extension. The targeted start of the position is in Fall of 2017, or as
soon as possible.

For questions please contact Dr. Matthias Mauder
(matthias.mauder(at)kit.edu) or Prof. Dr. Hans Peter Schmid
(hape.schmid(at)kit.edu).

Applications
Applications should be sent by e-mail to Dr. Matthias Mauder
(matthias.mauder(at)kit.edu) by 15 July 2017. Please send a copy of your
CV including a publication list, a short (1-2 page) letter of motivation
and contact details for 2 referees. The motivation letter should clearly
state your skills and experience pertinent to the position, and outline
ideas for contributions to the main tasks. Applications that are
incomplete or do not meet the requirements will not be considered.

KIT strives to achieve gender balance at all levels of employment. We
therefore particularly encourage women to apply for this position. With
appropriate qualifications, applications from persons with handicaps
will be treated with preference.
