Dear all,

DiMe, a multi-partner project coordinated by France Energies Marines and including Shom (shom.fr), Ifremer (ifremer.fr) and Cerema (cerema.fr), aims at improving the description of extreme sea state and wave breaking for Marine Renewable Energy applications through advances in physical understanding, observation tools and numerical modeling.

To complete the project successfully, Shom seeks two post-doc positions. The first one considers the observation component of the project and the second one considers the modeling component.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
POST-DOC POSITION 1 : Observation and analysis of wave breaking in extreme conditions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The work will be primarily observational, and will use stereo imagery, X-band marine radar, and various other sensors, to characterize the wave field and breaking during extreme events. These measurements will be used to study the physical processes driving breaking in extreme sea states. This will help deriving new or enhanced parameterizations of breaking statistics that will be implemented in the state of the art wave models used in the DiMe project.

The postdoctoral scholar will be based in Shom, Brest, France, and will mainly work with researchers Fabien Leckler, Peter Sutherland and Jean-François Filipot. Close collaboration with Ifremer and France Energies Marines required that postdoctoral scholar will split his time between Shom, Ifremer and potentially France Energy Marine (all located in Brest).

We are seeking a candidate who has the capacity to build on the experimental framework we have defined in order to develop their own independent scientific inquiries.

Specific duties will include:
- Develop a good understanding of the requirements of collaborators in the modelling community.
- Help deploy and manage instruments (X-band radar, stereo imaging system, ADCP, etc.).
- Process field data to extract surface wave field. This includes stereo image processing, x-band wave inversion, synchronization, and geo-rectification.
- Combine stereo imagery and X-band radar sensing to estimate directional wave spectra over scales from tens of centimetres to hundreds of metres.
- Implement breaker detection algorithm.
- Compute breaking statistics (e.g. whitecap coverage, breaker crest length distribution).
- Work in collaboration for deriving/improving wave breaking statistics parameterizations
- Collaborate with modellers to integrate these results into numerical wave models. Specifically, using the breaking measurements to improve modelled wave field dissipation.

Required minimum qualifications:
- Ph.D. in oceanography, atmospheric science, environmental engineering, fluid dynamics, or other closely-related subject
- Knowledge of ocean surface wave physics.
- Scientific field experience.
- Significant computer programming skills in Matlab and/or Python
- Knowledge of computer operating systems, networks, software packages, and data management.
- Data analysis and documentation skills.
- Verbal communication skills for collaboration.
- Fluency in English or French (both preferred)
- Written communication skills for writing reports and documenting work.
- Graphical design skills for preparation of final reports and presentations.

Additional relevant qualifications:
- 3 or more years of experience gathering and analyzing their own data, resulting in at least one scientific publication.
- 2 or more years of experience attending scientific conferences to present their work.
- Skills and knowledge of digital image processing techniques.

The contract will be 1.5 years, and will be administered by Shom.

For more information, or to apply, please contact Fabien Leckler (fabien....@shom.fr), Peter Sutherland (peter.su...@ifremer.fr) and Jean François Filipot (jean.franc...@ite-fem.org)

Application must be sent to the Shom human resources department r...@shom.fr and the deadline for applications is June 16th 2017. Applications (in English or French) should consist of:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
POST-DOC POSITION 2 : Development and improvement of spectral wave models for extreme condition hindcasts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The work will consist in developing spectral wave model WaveWatchIII so as to optimize its accuracy in simulating extreme sea states. The improvements are expected to be brought through improvement of the physical parameterization of the wave breaking source term. This part of the work will be done in collaboration with the observational team of DiMe who will provide wave breaking observations in extreme conditions. The postdoctoralscholar is further expected to validate his developments with a large dataset of observations collected in coastal and nearshore waters and featuring several extreme storms. Effort will be made to render the developments implemented in WaveWatchIII portable into other spectral models and especially the TOMAWAC model.

The postdoctoral scholar is split into two contracts First 12 months will be based in Shom, Brest, France, then 11 additional months in Cerema, Brest, France. The postdoctoral scholar will work with Fabien Leckler (Shom), Jean-François Filipot (France Energies Marines) and Anne-Laure Tiberi (Cerema), in a close and intense collaboration. We are seeking a candidate who has the capacity to develop its own independent scientific inquiries for the development of improved parameterization of the source terms.

Specific duties :
- Develop a good understanding of the wave breaking process for the development of sound wave breaking source term,
- Work in collaboration with the observational research team on the design and exploitation of the wave breaking field experiments,
- Help deploying and managing the WaveWatchIII model on the area of interest,
- Use and validate of the latest version of WW3 5.??? and in particular the implicit numerical schemes combined with unstructured meshes,
- Validate the developments implemented in WaveWatchIII with an extensive data set.

Required minimum qualifications are :
- Ph.D. in oceanography, atmospheric science, environmental engineering, fluid dynamics, or other closely-related subject
- Knowledge of ocean surface wave physics.
- Wave modeling experience involving code development.

- 3 or more years of experience running and developing numerical wave models, resulting in at least one scientific publication.
- 2 or more years of experience attending scientific conferences to present their work.
- Skills and knowledge of digital image processing techniques.
