Post-doctoral researcher in long-range forecasts, 80 – 100%, 2 years

The Forecast Development department is responsible for the operation and development of new methods for automated forecasting and decision support systems for meteorologists as well as for their training. The successful applicant drives scientific and technical developments for the quantitative verification of long-range forecasts as part of the two international projects Copernicus Climate Change Service QA4Seas and EU H2020 Heat-Shield.

Your tasks:
  • Creation and objective validation of probabilistic multi-models for global forecasts for the coming weeks and months.
  • Interpretation of the verification results and analysis of uncertainties relating to the processing chain, the validation methodology, and the inherently limited predictability of such long-range forecasts.
  • Documentation of findings in project reports and scientific publications, reporting and coordination of contributions for the European projects and presentation of findings at national and international conferences.
  • Preparation of recommendations for the development and further enhancement of the Copernicus Climate Change Services in close cooperation with project partners.
  • Support in terms of the development and running of the operational production chain for long-range forecasts, in particular for the development of early warning systems.

Your skills/qualifications:
  • PhD in meteorology, climatology or related subject.
  • In-depth knowledge of and practical experience with statistics and data analysis. Knowledge of ensemble and multi-model forecasting and corresponding verification strategies is a major advantage.
  • Experience in working with a UNIX environment and profound programming skills in R (statistics) and python. Experience in handling and evaluating very large, multi-dimensional meteorological data sets and corresponding performance optimisation.
  • You should have good active knowledge of German or French as a Swiss official language. Business fluency in English is a requirement due to the international collaboration.
  • Motivated team player with good communication skills.
