A change to word selection has been committed to Hg prompted by bug
#3111174: Double-click inside word selects non-word characters.

The new behaviour is based on: A double-click on a visible
character always selects that character and the word it is in. Thus
the mouse click is now resolved to a character position rather than an
inter-character position.
