Hi all

May's public SCiMMA session will be led by Professor Rich Wolski (UCSB), who over the last 18 months has brought his computer science expertise to bear on MMA problems in SCiMMA. An abstract is given below and the talk will take place on Tuesday 11th May (a week later than our regular public call slot) at 3pm Eastern/noon Pacific. Please mark the date and join us in 13 days

Zoom details:

Pub-sub and the Internet of Things (Astronomical and Otherwise)

Rich Wolski

Publish-subscribe (pub-sub) systems have emerged as a convenient high-level

paradigm for managing structured and unstructured data at scale.  In the

context of Multi-messenger Astronomy (MMA), they are particularly attractive for

alerting researchers to subsequent observations of events detected by large, shared, and

bespoke instrumentation.

In this talk, Professor Wolski will review pub-sub architectures and technologies,

particularly with respect to commercial open source artifacts.  He will

discuss Hopskotch, a software pub-sub system developed originally for MMA and

how its utility extends to other applications colloquially termed "The Internet

of Things.”
