Dear colleagues,
The Map the Giants team would like to inform you about an upcoming initiative that marks some of the next steps for our project.
The project began less than a year ago, aiming to discover, study, and, most importantly, protect the largest coral colonies in the ocean. Over the past few months, we have received numerous reports and started the first explorations, with great satisfaction. You can see some of the results on our interactive map. At the beginning of the year, we ran a crowdfunding campaign through which we committed to organizing an expedition solely dedicated to the search for giant corals.
And here we are, launching this initiative. The firstMap the Giants Scientific Expedition will take place from May 3rd to 10th in the Maldives, onboard a liveaboard operated by White Wave Maldives. This week-long expedition will focus on exploring the Maldivian reefs in the central atolls. Specifically, we aim to locate the largest coral colonies in these areas and begin collecting initial scientific data.
For this reason, the cruise is open to everyone, researchers of all levels or enthusiasts who believe in the value of these organisms. Thanks to the crowdfunding campaign, we are delighted to confirm that we can offer two free slots for participation to students and young researchers interested in and needing to collect data for their studies. One of these slots will be reserved exclusively for a Maldivian student.
This marks the beginning of an adventure for us, in an attempt to improve our understanding of this ecosystem and of what nature has been able to create and sustain until today. We are witnesses to rare natural phenomena that we cannot overlook. The mission of Map the Giants is to promote their importance to ensure their protection over time. Following the discovery of the world's largest coral, we are even more confident that other unique colonies ,though not necessarily the largest, exist and hold invaluable information, representing a priceless natural heritage.
Please circulate the mail amongst colleagues and possible interested people, REGISTRATIONS CLOSE ON JANUARY 30, 2025.
Additionally, we are open to any invitations to collaborate. Please write to us directly at mapthe...@unimib.it. Only through collaboration can we achieve significant milestones in conservation.
