Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that enrollment is now open for the new edition of the training course: “Mapping Technologies and Monitoring Techniques in Coral Reef Environments” – V Edition – MaRHE – Marine Research and Higher Education Center, Republic of the Maldives.

Understanding coral reef systems is essential for adapting to rapidly changing environmental conditions driven by climate change and human pressures.
Advances in mapping technologies now allow us to produce high-resolution spatial data of coral reef environments using Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), underwater photogrammetry, and acoustic instruments such as Multibeam Echosounders (MBES). These approaches support both scientific research and effective monitoring strategies for coral reef conservation.

The V Edition of the Mapping Technologies and Monitoring Techniques in Coral Reef Environments training course offers participants hands-on experience in data acquisition, processing, and interpretation using aerial and underwater survey techniques. The course focuses on coastal and nearshore reef environments and provides practical tools to assess natural processes and human impacts.

This year, the organising team has been expanded to include new collaborators, strengthening the scientific and training framework of the course. Alongside the team from the University of Milano-Bicocca, we are pleased to welcome:
• Dr Andrea Giulia Varzi (National Oceanography Centre, Southampton);
• Prof. Alessio Rovere (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice);
• Prof. Giovanni Scicchitano (University of Bari).

The training is designed for undergraduate and PhD students, NGO professionals, civil servants, and private consultants interested in innovative mapping and monitoring methodologies applied to coral reef environments.
