Dear all,
I would draw your attention to a new perspective paper on the needs and gaps in optical underwater technologies and methods for the investigation of marine animal forest 3D-structural complexity.
Abstract
Marine animal forests are benthic communities dominated by sessile suspension feeders (such as sponges, corals, and bivalves) able to generate three-dimensional (3D) frameworks with high structural complexity. The biodiversity and functioning of marine animal forests are strictly related to their 3D complexity. The present paper aims at providing new perspectives in underwater optical surveys. Starting from the current gaps in data collection and analysis that critically limit the study and conservation of marine animal forests, we discuss the main technological and methodological needs for the investigation of their 3D structural complexity at different spatial and temporal scales. Despite recent technological advances, it seems that several issues in data acquisition and processing need to be solved, to properly map the different benthic habitats in which marine animal forests are present, their health status and to measure structural complexity. Proper precision and accuracy should be chosen and assured in relation to the biological and ecological processes investigated. Besides, standardized methods and protocols are strictly necessary to meet the FAIR (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability) data principles for the stewardship of habitat mapping and biodiversity, biomass, and growth data.

Dear scientific divers,
we are pleased to invite you to the 7th European Conference on Scientific Diving which will take place in Roscoff (France) from 25 to 29 April 2022. This edition is organized under the auspices of the French National Committee for Scientific Diving (CNPS, https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-02123970), and hosted by the Station Biologique de Roscoff. The Conference is supported by the European Scientific Diving Panel (ESDP).
The website (https://ecsd7.sciencesconf.org/ ) is now open for registration and submission of your contributions. You'll find also all the details of the upcoming conference.
A particular focus will be given during ECSD7 on diving-based scientific researches, case-studies and methods that aim at better understand and document the impacts of global changes on freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems, or are helpful for their conservation/restoration. Particular attention will be paid to natural habitats of special concerns for the EU (such as those listed in Natura 2000) and to artificial environments (wrecks, artificial reefs, MRE devices...).
Communications underlining the usefulness and added-value of scientific diving in this context and discussing diving-based monitoring methods, in particular with regards to innovative underwater tools and techniques, are welcome (Changing tools, methods, practices and goals?).
Main topics for the talks and posters may concern biology/ecology, physical oceanography, biogeochemistry, geosciences, archaeology, technologies, scientific diving (SD) education and training, and SD regulation. Marine spatial planning and marine renewable energies may be also new emerging topics when considering the growing demand for sustainable management of the littoral and coastal zones and environmental issues associated with the setting up of MRE technologies.
We are looking for the publication of the conference proceedings in a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal.
The first two days of the Conference (26-27/04) will be dedicated to plenary sessions, on various topics related to this overall theme. The final topics and contents of the sessions will be defined after the abstracts selection.
The conference will also include two 3-hour workshops organized in parallel on the third day (28/04):
A special night
event (evening conference) open
to the public will take place at the Roscoff cinema on
April 28 (invited speaker: Laurent Ballesta, Andromède
Océanologie, Maugio-Carnon).
Associated field trips on Friday April 29 may be chosen among SCUBA diving (limited number of participants) and/or a boat tour in the Bay of Morlaix (near nature reserve islands), and the visit of the Château du Taureau, Batz island, and R.V. Neomysis (SBR Research Vessel).
For any question about the
Conference, please contact: ecsd7...@sciencesconf.org

Dear all,
If you are planning to joint the 7th ECSD (https://ecsd7.sciencesconf.org/) and take advantage of the early bid discount, you need to be responsive as early bid registration and abstract submission are closing on January 15 2022.
Why you should join us in Roscoff?
Taking place on April 25-29 2022 at the Roscoff Biological
Station, the 7th ECSD live conference will not only give the
participants an insight on the current challenges and
opportunities for underwater sciences and scientific diving, but
will also provide updates and future forecasts on the latest
technology trends (see my previous mail). It will feature various
interactive sessions, presentations, and case studies from key
scientific diving players and provide excellent live networking
opportunities with your peers.
Conference agenda
April 25: Evening ice breaker (starts at 19:30 PM)
April 26 and 27: Plenary sessions (talks and posters);
gala dinner on April 27
April 28: Workshops (morning) and plenary sessions (afternoon); special night event (evening conference) open to the public at the Roscoff cinema (invited speaker: Laurent Ballesta, Andromède Océanologie, Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021; saturation diving)
April 29: Side events (SCUBA diving on the Aboukir Bay
wreck, visits)
Registration is simple:
Register before January 15 2022 for only 230 € (students) or 340 euros (permanent staff) at https://ecsd7.sciencesconf.org/registration. In case of cancellation of the Conference due to the sanitary crisis, registration fees will be entirely reimbursed.
Abstract submission
Don't forget to send your abstract(s) before January 15 also, if
you plan giving a talk or presenting a poster.
Questions?
For any question about the Conference, please contact: ecsd7...@sciencesconf.org
We look forward to meet you and discuss SD
research activities during this
exciting edition of the ECSD.
Sincerely,

REMINDER: 2 days left for early bid registration and abstract submission!
NEW abstract submission deadline:
January 28.
Dear all,
As you know, the abstract submission
deadline for ECSD7 has been extended to January 28.
Clearly, the sanitary crisis does not help us in organizing this
edition since many potential participants are still hesitating
over registering. Let me remember you that the first step of the
process (pre-registration) is free (you'll pay registration fees
only after acceptance of your communication, if you have submitted
an abstract) and that registration fees will be entirely
reimbursed in case of cancellation of the Conference due
to the sanitary crisis.
Right now, we have 60 pre-registrations, that is 50% of the
expected number of participants, and only 25 abstracts. The former
questions the financial outcome of the Conference while the latter
questions its scientific interest. So, I urge you to pre-register
and send your abstract(s) on time if you want to participate to
this 7th edition in Roscoff.
Next Monday, the organizing and scientific committees will decide whether the 7th edition is maintained in late April 2022 or postponed.
Sincerely,
