Workshop Coral Bleaching Automated Stress System (CBASS) in the Maldives. 2° Edition

I would like to inform you that registrations are now open for the second edition of Workshop "Coral Bleaching Automated Stress System (CBASS) in the Maldives – A rapid system to determine standardized coral thermal thresholds in the field" which will be held at MaRHE Center (Magoodhoo Island, Maldives) from 24 November to 02 December 2025.

 

The workshop is organized by MaRHE Team and led by Prof. Christian Voolstra (University of Konstanz, Germany), a renowned coral reef researcher and current ICRS President, expert in assessing coral thermal tolerance through the recently developed and standardized heat stress assay, the Coral Bleaching Automated Stress System (CBASS). CBASS is an innovative approach for screening and identifying naturally heat tolerant coral populations that can inform conservation and restoration approaches. Therefore, the workshop represents an incredible opportunity to gain hands-on experience on a popular, rapid, and standardized system and platform to assess coral bleaching tolerance in the field.  

In addition to learning how to run CBASS assays, we will discuss integrating short-term diagnostic approaches to inform research and conservation efforts, covering experimental design, best practices, logistics, data analysis, and contextualization with environmental metadata.

 

The 9-day hands-on, in-water/out-of-water practical program includes a series of classroom lessons, training sessions, CBASS practical activities, and field activities including SCUBA diving in the reefs surrounding the island. The workshop is open to students (master or PhD), researchers, and professionals. A dive license is required.

 

Registrations are open until September 17th, 2025 and the available places are limited
