One way I got my students to study was to have them create their own "cheat sheets". I would help them create a table with all the info they would need for each mineral and/or rock. Then they would use google to look up each rock/mineral to find pictures (they could use as many as they wanted but in fact it gave them the idea that there were many different versions). They would fill in all the information for the table from any resource including the book (thus learning how to use the book as well). They were often able to use the notebook/references easily because they created them. Just a thought for you.
