Research activities

My research activities are carried out in the laboratory ‘Matériaux Optiques
à Propriétés Spécifiques’ (directors: Pr Fontana et Pr Kugel) of the Centre
Lorrain d’Optique et d’Electronique des Solides (C.L.O.E.S). The C.L.O.E.S is
a research center of the University of Metz associated with the Ecole Supérieure
d’Electricité.
Near activities like Raman and Neutron spectroscopy and lattice dynamics
calculations, new axis of investigations have been recently developped in
the laboratory:
These investigations consist in:
- the elaboration of new non-linear optical materials
- the determination of electro-optic coefficients of bulk optical materials
- the electro-optic properties of thin films
- the dielectric measurements with high frequency electrical field (1 MHz-1 GHz)
- the characterization of optical frequency converters materials and
non-linear photorefractive materials.
The scientific topic consits of the synthesis and characterization of
dielectric materials with optical properties valuable for integration in
optoelectronic devices.
These properties are studied in relation with fondamental properties such as
the manifestation of structural modification (phase transition), electric,
dielectric and ferroelectric behaviours as well as others more specific properties
(photoconductivity, dielectric relaxation...)
My own research activities were carried out during my thesis and are based on crystals
and ceramics of lead perovskite oxydes like PbZr1-xNbxO3 , PbZr1-xTaxO3,
PbZr1-xTixO3(PZT) and Pb1-yLay(Zr1-xTix)O3 (PLZT). These materials are
ferroelectrics and are of considerable interest in electronic industry in optic
and telecommunication: dielectric for capacitors, transductors, resonators and
piezoelectrics.
The research activities are based on Raman and dielectric spectroscopy as
function of temperature, electric field and concentration of defects.
The link between Raman results and the phase transition (the mechanism,
the symetry and sequence of the different phases) is stablished in relation
with the pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties and the manifestation
of the spontanous polarization.
