The head of Russia's civilian space agency says the
hole in a spacecraft docked at the International Space
Station was caused by a drill and could have been
"deliberate".

The hole was detected in the Soyuz craft by crew members
on Wednesday; they used tape to seal the leak after it caused
a minor loss of pressure.

"There were several attempts at drilling," Dmitry Rogozin
said.

The drill appeared to have been held by a "wavering hand",
he added.

An impact by a small space rock - a micrometeorite - or a
small piece of orbital debris has been ruled out.

There are currently six crew members aboard the ISS: three
Americans, two Russians and a German.

A commission would seek to identify the culprit by name,
Mr Rogozin said. He added that this was a "matter of honour"
for Russia's Energiya space manufacturing company that
made the Soyuz.

The hole is in a section of the Soyuz ship that will not be
used to carry astronauts back to Earth.

. . . . . .

Yikes !

Although they must be considered, it is hugely doubtful
that any of the astronauts themselves did this - they've
just worked TOO hard to get where they are.

This leaves a much larger pool of suspects however.
Anyone with access to the Soyuz from initial
manufacturing on could have used something akin
to a battery-powered Dremel to create the tiny hole.

There's even the possibility that it was an accident,
unrealized, when someone in the manufacturing
sector dropped or misapplied a small drill. No doubt
there are many tight spots ... and in trying to reach
to drill a proper hole they could have simply missed
the target a few times, unaware they'd actually
punctured the skin.

An actual terrorist ... I'd expect something far more
spectacular, a small explosive device or corrosive
chemical. It's also possible we're looking at a sick
joker who thought it would be a hoot to make a tiny
hole and then watch the fallout.

So, it MAY be sabotage - but there are also some
other explainations.
