Curiosity’s first SAM results on solid Martian material were
announced. The instrument appears to be working well, and the team is
busy analyzing the new data. (Note 1). The solid Martian material is
mostly composed of fossilized remains of biological cells (Note 2),
which contain amino acids. In view of the vast number of fossilized
cells in the “sand” at Rocknest, the amino acids, if found, should
have come from Martian past life instead of non-life process.
