This gave me an idea. There is a great overproduction of scientists;
many good ones apply for one vacancy. If you consider yourself to be a
good scientist, how do you get a new job without 'networking' ?
Here is an answer: you "advertise". I am thinking about creating a new
publication where the scientists can advertise their availability for
an obscene amount of money, say, $50k. This is actually an advantage
for the prospective employers, because a 'selection criterion' of a
$50k reduces the available pool of applicants. Thus, the propsective
employer can pick up the thin edition of "The Advertiser", find a
suitable person by the skill, and hire him without a worry about the
selection process ! If a person can "advertise", this means that they
have earned good money at the previous job, which means they were
good. And, of course, the editors of "The Advertiser" will still have
to conduct a basic assessment of the credentials of the advertisee, in
order to ensure that his PhD degree is not a fake and he indeed has
lots of publications in the premier journals, i.e. he is not a
'schmuk' with money who wants to break through into science.
I will run this business -- "The Advertiser". I will have to advertise
this business heavily in the beginning to attract the clients. But
then my publication will become recognised and esteemed, like 'Nature'
or 'Science'. I will be the one who will rake in the obscene fees. As
a scientist, I will never go hungry again.

Honorable Antonio deeply despise numeric. He prefers building of
prototypes out of the heap.
a brilliant idea, one that will not fly though, since employers as a
pervasive rule want
to get the most for the least amount of pay.... and anyone that can
afford a 50k ad will be asking
way more than that.
employers from my experience do not parst talent into the hiring
decision...to them all engineers
of a certain variety are equal... not to fear though, such
corporations evenually collapse, as they
take their host country down with them.
to get paid for your talent be self employed... in your case... offer
research results for a flat fee, then
add extra work in at 2 to 3x the wage rate. .. deal only with owners
and principles, *never with the staff
or middle management (the most comon fatal mistake). Dont even think
about dealing with those... just
the barrest nod..never a negotiation or serious discussion of the
issues....
Keep many irons in the fire at all times... at the first sign of non
compliance or disrepect... give notice and
gear up your own advertising (105 of your gross income should be in
advertzing)... but finish the job.
If they shape up consider staying but do not forget the damage done...
it can be entirely fatal dealing
with those who do not respect talent...and i mean that in the most
litteral sense.

those sites get recruiters.... 99% idiots, then its the HR dept....
the mix....imo...a total loser. I wont even return their calls.
and it says so on my resume.... best case you get a wage job inside a
pathologically insane corporation.... a fate worse than death.
sandwiched between sociopaths and idiots.
with self employment you dnt have that. you can kick their ass.
Phil scott
you can contract to build prototypes in yer garage... using their
heap.
and then bill whatever you want.

When my grandson set up his lemonade stand in the summer
three years ago and charged an extortionate amount for a glassful,
I bought a glass of his lemonade - he was after all my grandson
and I felt it right that I should encourage his enterprise. Not having
done all that well, having a surfeit of lemonade and a dearth of
cash, he informed me that I could pay more if I wished.
I politely declined. Perhaps Antonio is seven years old also.

Sure - we'll have Antonio and he'll keep us awake with his scintillating
conversations and exuberance - well, okay, we'll have each other to talk to.

Intriguingly, every report I have seen says that the US does not have enough
scientists and that the needs will be less and less filled over time

It is because every report has been written according to the same
template:

Nobody bothers to look out of the window and check the reality. And
why the should? They are paid for that.

Almost everyone fails to read these PR-propaganda reports with skepticism.
Anyone should be able to call up the head of any search committee and find
out that the applicant to job ratio can be anywhere from 100 to one on up
to 1000 to one. If there were a true shortage then kids who are six
months from getting their PhDs should be getting multiple job offers before
they get their PhDs, etc.

what's the percentage in saying US needs more scientists. What's the
benefit of creating a glut?

Never mind, I just figured it out. It's the employers saying it. Glut =
lower wages because of competition.

I think, historically, it has been remarkable document in the sense
that it marked an era of scientific expansion.
The problem is that the world is changing and things that look eternal
come to an end at one moment or another.
