I am a college student interested in learning about the field of Art
Therapy. I am looking for information, or guidence, on the types of
undergraduate courses that may be helpful in becoming a member of this
field. I am also interested in learning as much as possible about the
application and uses of Art Therapy. Any information would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

The Symbolism of Style: Art as Therapy RM Simon (1992) offers a
different perspective to the more usual psychology of art area taught
on most courses. Follow-up book now in preparation discusses its use
with various patient types: eg physical illness, eldery, mental
illness, abused children, etc
Both published by Routledge.
Author is my mother writing from 40 years experience of Art Therapy:

Thanks! I'll have to see if I can find it. Im In the USA, Maryland. I
have been seriously considering a career in psychotherapy, and because of
my natural knack for the arts have decided that art therapy may be what I
am looking for. However, I really dont know much about the field. I have
only heard a few things; not enough to base my entire college career on.
For this reason I have decided to find out as much as I can about what
kind of practice it entails, and what kind of schooling is necessary. Do
you know if your mother's book has been published in the US?
Thanks again

Jodi,
You might want to check out Loyola Marymount College in Southern
California. They have a master's program for art therapists that is one
of the best in the country. Maybe they can give you some useful
information.

Best of luck,

Jean Otto, Ph.D.

I am finishing up my graduate work (MAAT) in art therapy at the School
of the Art Institute of Chicago. If you can make it out to Chicago, my
class is putting on an art exhibition featuring the work of art therapy
students and our clients. We are also holding a workshop on diverse
practices in art therapy. All info relating to the show and the
workshop, in addition to links to SAIC's MAAT program are on our
website:
