An electronic Nuclear Physics Theory Preprint Repository has been
established at internet address nuc...@xxx.lanl.gov, effective October 1,
1992. Subscribers to the nucl-th mailing list will receive, through
e-mail,
regular announcements of recent submissions to the repository. They can
retrieve a desired preprint by a simple 'get preprint-number' in the
subject
line of an e-mail message to nuc...@xxx.lanl.gov. Likewise, one can
submit
preprints to the repository for other subscribers to access.

Most communication with nucl-th can be accomplished by commands sent in
the
Subject line of e-mail messages. (The body, if any, is discarded, except
in the
case of a submission.) Care must be taken to follow the precise rules of
interaction since, for protection of the system and database, repeated
failures
are treated as attempts to 'hack' the system, and can produce serious
consequences for the incautious subscriber. Available commands are:

get put add replace listing find subscribe cancel distribution comment
help

Further information on their usage can be obtained by sending a `help'
request
(i.e., a message with subject-line Subject: help) to nuc...@xxx.lanl.gov.

Preprints can also be retrieved by anonymous ftp access from
xxx.lanl.gov.
The papers and listings directories are in public directories named
'nucl-th/papers' and 'nucl-th/listings'. Be careful to get multiple
files in a single ftp access.

Preprint documents in this repository are stored in either TeX or LaTeX
format, sometimes with postscript files for the figures. Some standard
macro
packages (e.g. revtex, harvmac, phyzzx, ...) necessary to 'compile' TeX
files
are also available from the repository. After retrieval, the preprints
can
then be compiled and previewed or printed out at one's home institution.
Authors can replace their preprints with revised versions (when absolutely
necessary).

This preprint repository is a clone of the system designed for a
high-energy
theory bulletin board and described by Paul Ginsparg (T-8, LANL) in a
letter
published in Physics Today, June 1992, p. 13. There are now ten such
repositories, the other nine being:

alg-...@publications.math.duke.edu (algebraic geometry)
astr...@babbage.sissa.it (astrophysics)
cond...@babbage.sissa.it (condensed matter)
e-m...@xxx.lanl.gov (e-mail address database)
func...@babbage.sissa.it (functional analysis)
gr...@xxx.lanl.gov (gravitation, quantum cosmology)
hep...@ftp.scri.fsu.edu (computational and lattice physics)
hep...@xxx.lanl.gov (high energy physics,
phenomenological)
hep...@xxx.lanl.gov (high energy physics, formal)

We expect, after a trial period, to also initiate a nucl-ex repository for
experimental nuclear physics preprints.

To subscribe to this service, send an e-mail message to
nuc...@xxx.lanl.gov
with the subject-line

Subject: subscribe yourfirstname yourlastname

where 'yourfirstname yourlastname' is replaced by your name (which can
have any
number of words and initials).
