Does anyone know how big chance there is that ITER will work? What are the
main problems with the project right now?

Lubos,
It isn't designed to be really ignited state reactor (a reactor that
reaches ignition) .. ITER is a public works project to keep scientists
employed. They are not any closer today to a working fusion reactor than
when the U.S. Gov't funded Project Sherwood in 1951-1958.
Look at a new design for a working fusion reactor at http://www.singtech.com
