Loosely mathematics can be divided on the lines of being "continuous"
or "discrete". In continuous mathematics variable lie in a continuum,
in discrete mathematics variables can only take set values, each
completely separate from each other.

For example the number of people in a room is discrete since it must
have an integer value. The height of a person is continuous since it
could be any real number within a
suitable range.
