file format and viewer for newbie

I am learning CFD at home and I would like to save the output of my
simple simulations and visualize them. Can you please suggest a file
format that is easy to develop with and an easy to use viewer ? I do
not need something very complex. I just need to be able to save and to
view 2D and 3D fields created from a C++ program.

I am using Linux and want to use open-source software only.

You may also want to check VisIt

https://wci.llnl.gov/codes/visit/

It handles natively many file formats, and you can also add you own
reader in C++.
