Eating, Sleeping, Mating and Defending: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Safety needs – Personal, Financial & Health
Social needs – Friendship, Intimacy & Family
Esteem - status, recognition, fame, prestige, and attention / self-
esteem, strength, competence, mastery, self-confidence, independence
and freedom
Self-actualization - maximum potential and possibilities
Self-transcendence - realm of Being, unitive consciousness, serene and
contemplative, mystic, sacral, ecstatic
However Maslow's theory has a materialistic foundation and it can be
argued that Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs pyramid is also totally
materialistic even at the pyramid top where the materiality is more
advanced to the extent that it imports and borrows from spirituality,
for example Prabhupada is very critical about certain non-devotee
authors and those that are not a pure devotee are translating in a
bogus way for their “personal ambition” the Bhagavad-gita and thus
Prabhupada's Bhagavad-gita is and has “As-It-Is” in the title,
“Bhagavad-gita As It Is”. Thus it can be argued that Maslow's theory
is more or less eating, sleeping, mating and defending sort.
Prabhupada (Hare कrishna Founder) is saying:
“Material life means eating, sleeping, mating and defending. This is
material life. And spiritual life means something more than this. Just
likकe animal life or human life. Animal life, the common formula is
eating, sleeping, mating and defending. A dog also eats; a man also
eats. A man also sleeps, and a dog also sleeps. The man also have sex
life, and the dog also have sex life. The dog also defends in his own
way, and man also defends in his own way, maybe atomic bomb. That is a
different thing. But the defense, defense measure… These four
principles are common between human being and animal. So advancement
of these four principles is not human civilization. That is animal
civilization. That is not human civilization.”
“So long one is not spiritually inquisitive, jijnasu sreya uttamam, he
is animal because he has got only these four principles: eating,
sleeping, mating and defending. That’s all. He must be inquisitive,
“What I am? Why I am put into these miseries of life—birth, death,
old, disease? Is there any remedy?” These things should be questioned.
Then it is human life. Then it is spiritual life.”
Prabhupada (Hare कrishna Founder) signalled automated initiations via
Howrah Station (Calcutta) Rail Modelling in November 1977 however this
