Hi,

I'm looking for a replacement for (or equivalent to) 3M's Nextel Black
Velvet Coating - the spray paint that's used inside optical systems to cut
down on stray light reflection.

Thanks!

When you find out, please share the wealth.
Is there a FAQ on optical black paints and other materials?

I have informally kept a sci.optics "Black FAQ". You may find it at
ftp://ftp.visi.com/users/svta/CurrentblackFAQ.txt

If you find any new information, please post it here and I will add it
to the FAQ.

This has come up several times on the Amateur Telescope Makers' mailing
list. A search of the archives at:

http://www.system.missouri.edu/atm/

for "nextel" should turn up some suggestions. I have a vague (and
possibly incorrect) recollection of someone mentioning a company in
Europe that either bought the rights, or makes an equivalent.

I have seen all of these used on space flight telescope baffles:

1. Aeroglaze Z-306 polyurethane paint (Lord Corp.)

2. Black etched beryllium

3. Martin Black, a proprietary black anodized aluminum coating
(Lockheed Martin)

4. Anodized aluminum, no dye

5. Anodized aluminum, black dye (and sealed)

I'm certain that there are more; these are the ones that I'm familiar
with. Since your application is unknown, I can't provide any more
specific information.

If possible, I'm using black PE sheet or black Delrin.
Both are cheap, available in large quantities, and are black in the
visible as well as in the near infrared wavelength range.

In article <36E931...@casema.net>,
Isn't polyethilene the stuff garbage bags are made from?
Those are notorious for leaking near-IR, as many darkroom-hobbiests have
experienced, using this as a cheap black-out material....8-))

For Straylight reduction you need a
"very very" black and matte surface.
PE Sheet or Delrin are black but very glossy.

The former "3M Black Velvet" is absolutely unbeatable
in this points.

Hi,
We make an optical coating called Optoblack, which is about 1.5% lower in
reflectance than the old 3M Nextel black. It is 'black' (ie <3%R) from 0.2 to
16 microns (I can't measure further out than that). Unfortunately, we only sell
it as a coating service- we're not in the paint business, so you would have to
send parts to us and have them coated. Coating is extremely lambertian- no
gloss at all- even at fairly high angles.
I think it's in our website (www.labsphere.com) or you can contact me at work
at art_s...@labsphere.com

Alan, etal.
There was an FAQ on black materials that I downloaded off this newsgroup a
couple of years ago.
FYI, there is a commercial database of black materials and coatings-
reflectance, BRDF, usages, outgassing, etc- (among other things, but the most
complete that I've ever seen) called "Solexis" produced by Dr. Susan McCall and
a company called SORIC in Canada. (No, I have no financial stake in the
company, although I did provide a percentage of the spectral data and Sue is a
friend of mine).

Sounds very good Art.

How easy is it to coat tubes inside,
diameter say around 0.5 - 1.5" 12.5-32mm?

I will try to send several parts for testing purposes.
