There is a forum at SPIE. However, it is almost inactive.
I entered the SPIE forum recently and it's really almost inactive as
you said, but I would suggest people who know about optics to give
their contribute to it as, in my opinion, it seems very well done, with
lots of different area of optics you can choose from.

This would make sense if there were 1000 posts daily in optics. But with,
what, maybe 25 posts to sci.optics a day at most, it's a lot quicker and
easier to just go through the subject headers in 10 seconds to find what
you want.
No?

I agree with what you wrote, even if in the SPIE forum there are a
number of diffent sections that may cover more than just sci.optics.
What looks strage to me (and I'll write to SPIE about that too) is that
their forum could be an important feature of the membership benefits. I
mean, when you enter SPIE as I did you move into a 17.000 people group
and you might expect that you could share easily experinces and get
suggestions from other mates there in through the forum, not just
during a meeting.
When you enter the forum you see it's not populated, while it should be
in my opinion, it could be a great resource for society. Newcomers
would be more interested entering it if experinced people take
sometimes a look at and give their precious suggestions, don't you
think?
I'll try to do my part, but so far I really can't say I'm experienced
in optics, just a beginner!
