I'd like to know too. I have a paper copy of LOWTRAN6.FOR that I have been
trying to scan. I'm sure it's in version 7 or 8 by now.
I'm sure it's about .5M.

There is a Macintosh version available from:
swdsrv.edvz.univie.ac.at:/mac/MacSciTech/physics
I've appended the "readme" file.
I'll ask the obvious question: What does LOWTRAN do?

MacLOWTRAN7.readme
Note: This is a beta version of this program. It is still being
worked on, but I cannot catch everything. A MS Word version of a users
guide is in the works, but the interface should be easy enough to
figure out. Clicking on the left and right arrow icons moves up and
down in the card stack, including subcards (like Card 2D2), whereas
clicking on the card buttons will jump to the initial card (like Card
2). Please try out this program and let me know what problems you
find. Send all comments to: sro...@suned1.nswses.navy.mil
This program produces results that differ from those given in the Users
Guide for the LOWTRAN7 test cases. I dont know if it is due to the
fact that LOWTRAN has had revisions since the initial release. I
havent heard back from the guys at Hanscom AFB yet, so if anyone can
verify this program versus the real LOWTRAN7 rev4.2 test case results,
Id be interested in hearing from you.

----------------------------------------------------------------
MacLOWTRAN7 provides an easy-to-use Macintosh interface for the low
resolution atmospheric radiance and transmittance model LOWTRAN 7.
MacLOWTRAN7 presents the user with editable input cards to set the
parameters required by LOWTRAN and allows these inputs to be saved as a
file for future use. The input cards use check boxes, pop-up menus,
and editable text fields common to Macintosh applications. MacLOWTRAN7
currently uses revision 4.2 of LOWTRAN 7 dated Feb. 1, 1992. More
information on LOWTRAN 7 can be found in the Users Guide to LOWTRAN 7,
AFGL-TR-88-0177, 16 August, 1988, Air Force Geophysics Laboratory,
Hanscom AFB, MA 01731, (617) 377-3654.
There is currently no plotting utility provided with MacLOWTRAN7.
However, output data can be specified as tab or column delimited for
importing into a spreadsheet or plotting application. This output file
is produced in addition to the tapes 6-8 and is titled import.dat.
Import.dat is a TEXT file with MPW Shell as creator type. The standard
output files' (tapes 6-8) creator type can be selected from a choice of
4 word processors. MacLOWTRAN7 requires a Macintosh with System 7,
68020 or better and a floating-point coprocessor. The card sizes were
selected with a 13" screen in mind.
Known problems:
The main event loop sometimes seems to ignore some mouse down and
keydown events, i.e., it sometimes takes a couple of tries to get
something to happen.
Program jumps back to Card1 following a LOWTRAN run.
The file management isnt all that good, so its probably best to keep
the input files in the same folder as the application for now.
Tabbing through fields in Card 2C2 gets messed up sometimes.

Lowtran itself is a *royal pain* to use; a firm called Oncore (USA)
sells Lowtran in a 'PC package' with front & back ends; far from
perfect, but useable.
Be sure you get the latest version if you get it elsewhere, its
Lowtran 7 now I think.

It calculates the optical transmission of the atmosphere, given a frequency
band, time of year, etc. I am aware of some of its application to remote
sensing.

Some corrections -- the name of the company is Ontar and it located
in one of the suburbs of Boston, Mass -- near Concord, Lexington,...
I don't have any of their literature readily avaiable, but they sell
the code, so they won't allow ftp. The government version is
not sold, per se, but it does cost a nominal fee for cutting the
tape (~$100 last time I checked).
Second -- LOWTRAN is an obsolete code. Developed by the Air Force
Geophysics Lab (now the Geophysics Directorate of Phillips Lab) around
1970, it has gone through a number of version. LOWTRAN 2 was the first
public release version, with intermediate versions 3,3B,4,5,6, and 7.
A 5 wavenumber resolution version of 5 (called 5 BMOD) was released by
the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, CA. The LOWTRAN code is a
20 wavenumber resolution code. LOWTRAN 7 was released in 1988.
It has been replaced by MODTRAN (NODTRAN 2 is in beta test), also
released by the Geophysics Directorate of Phillips Lab. MODTRAN
is a 2 wavenumber resolution code. It includes LOWTRAN 7 as a
subset.
The only OFFICIAL versions of LOWTRAN and MODTRAN are available from
Ontar (PC version only) or from the National Climatic Data Center,
Asheville, NC (government version of source code in ANSI FORTRAN 77).
No ftp sites contain the OFFICIAL versions. I
emphasize the official since a lot of people have modified the code
for their own purposed. LOWTRAN/MODTRAN have been extenssively
validated, but unofficial versions should be considered suspect.
Finally, a plug -- Phillips Lab is developing a code called MOSART
(Moderate Spectral Atmosphere Radiance and Transmittance) code that
contains MODTRAN, and also includes a large data base of model
atmospheres and backgrounds. I am developing the code for Phillips
Lab and it is currently in beta test. I hope a public version will
be available in May-June time frame.
As far as LOWTRAN being a royale pain to use, I assume this refers to
the fixed format input file -- the MOSART code should be significantly
easier to use, either with a X-window GUI or a simple editor.

egarcia> I am trying to get the software package called "LOWTRAN". Could
egarcia> anybody out there tell me if it is available through any ftp?
This question comes up from time to time. So far as I know, there is NO
ftp source for the Lowtran or Modtran series for atmospheric
transmission programs.
The official source for Lowtran and Modtran is:
National Climatic Data Center
Environmental Data Services
Federal Building
Asheville, NC 28801
(704) 259-0682
Cost is about $150 for the 9-track tape. They will take a major credit
card for the order.
