I have been unable to locate any historical information about the
invention and subsequent development of binoculars (including opera
glasses and field glasses). I have found that Garrett P. Serviss
wrote the first book on astronomical observing using binoculars,
entitled "Astronomy with an Opera-Glass" in 1888. I suspect
binoculars were invented long before that, however, but haven't a
clue as to when and by whom, nor when they first came into common
use.
Any information and/or references about the History of Binoculars
would be greatly appreciated! Thank You.
