I just read an article that referred to IFF (identification friend
or foe) systems manufactured by Teledyne for use in "Navy E2C and Air Force
APX-109 aircraft".
I've never heard of an APX-109, and I can't find a reference to it in
any of the usual FAQs, the Jane's WWW server, etc. What's an APX-109?

I don't know for certain but I'll bet that APX-109 is the nomenclature
for an IFF transponder. APX translates to an airborne radar
identification/recognition device on my JETDS Magic Key Decoder.
Speaking of which, the Decoder can be a handy thing to have, and I'd
be willing to type it in and post it if there's interest. It's helpful
in determining the purposes of random bits of military electronics.
So does any mil radar guru have a more detailed description of the
AN/APX-109?

I'll bet that the APX-109 is the actual IFF equipment, and the article
is in error the way it is written.
I believe that I still have a surplus APX-6 on the shelf - it was purchased
surplus and gutted to provide RF parts for various amateur radio
projects operating near 1200mc.
