No he wasn't. I recall seeing a picture of a young, short haired Jim
Morrison aboard the carrier his father commanded but alas, I can't
recall the name.

No. The author and historian was Samuel Eliot Morison.

Jim Morrison's father did become an admiral, and while I was in the Navy
(83-87), he apparently lived in Coronado (San Diego).

"`It's fifteen hundred miles to Ankh-Morpork,' he said. `We've got
three hundred and sixty elephants, fifty carts of forage, the
monsoon's about to break, and we're wearing ... we're wearing ...
sort of things, like glasses, only dark ... dark things on our eyes ... "
We are naturally talking about "Morison".
Although I do remember that Jim was a strong naval enthusiast, and had
to be forcefully talked out of calling his band "The Hatches".

George "Steve" Morrison (two "r"'s) was a naval aviator in WWII and later
commanded the CV Bonhomme Richard in the Gulf of Tonkin in the early days
of 'Nam. He retired as a rear admiral.
