I just read in the Toronto Globe&Mail today that Jim Morrison's father
was an admiral in the USN. Anybody know if it was *that* Admiral
Morrison?

No he wasn't. I recall seeing a picture of a young, short haired Jim
Morrison aboard the carrier his father commanded but alas, I can't
recall the name.

No. The author and historian was Samuel Eliot Morison.

Jim Morrison's father did become an admiral, and while I was in the Navy
(83-87), he apparently lived in Coronado (San Diego).

We are naturally talking about "Morison".

Although I do remember that Jim was a strong naval enthusiast, and had
to be forcefully talked out of calling his band "The Hatches".

Nope. T'wasn't.

George "Steve" Morrison (two "r"'s) was a naval aviator in WWII and later
commanded the CV Bonhomme Richard in the Gulf of Tonkin in the early days
of 'Nam. He retired as a rear admiral.

Incorrect. Jim Morrison’s father was named George Stephen Morrison. He did
indeed make it to being a Rear Admiral, but as he was born in 1919 and he
made Rear Adm in 1967 he was rather older than 39 when he did it.
