Does anyone know the name of the actual submarine used in the 1959 movie "Operation Petticoat"? It appears to be a Balao or Gato class World War II boat and in the movie has the number 393 on the Conning tower. The movie was filmed around Key West Florida (doubling as the Philippines in the movie). Beyond that I can't seem to find any information on this sub.

Was this sub decommissioned and destroyed or does it exist somewhere? Any information appreciated. Thanks.

A quote from:

"The Movie "Operation Petticoat" used the USS Balao (SS-285) as the
"pink boat". The submarine was actually painted pink for the Movie.
The "gray boat" was the USS Queenfish (AGSS-393).

http://www.atule.com/ and
http://www.atule.com/table_of_contents-2.htm will give you an idea of
the bona fides of the site. It would appear at a glance to be a labor
of love by an old-line diesel submariner.

FWIW, It was the 30th entry picked off by a Google on "Operation
Petticoat". Easy to find as most of the previous entries were
tape/DVD sellers or review sites. Took about a minute to find it in
the results.

The conning tower fairwater from the Balao was on display outside at the
Washington Navy Yard Museum Annex but has since been sent to the Norfolk Navy
Yard for restoration. There was no evidence of pink paint... There was a
conning tower pressure tube inside the Annex building, but I do not know what
boat it came from.

Perhaps SS 393?

If it was Balao, her conning tower is now on display at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, DC.

The rest of the sub was sunk as a target in the Atlantic off the coast of Florida on 06 September 1963 (according to the brass plate at the display).
