Welcome to the group. Don't mind the crusty old SOBs in this group; they
have hearts of gold. Plus they can't help it that they never joined the
Marines and/or artillery...we have standards.

Victory at Sea
Excellent in every way. Good example of reality transcending fiction.

On the Beach (1959)
Have seen it many times, beyond emotional. Superb acting. Not really a navy
movie, but sub resembles a Tang class. Been a long time since I've seen it.

Das Boot
Saw the long version when it came out. Much like the short version, but real
time sweating.

Apocalypse Now
Much better in a theater. Nice patrol boat.

Enemy Below
Classic story.

The Bedford Incident
Dramatic. Sparse, focused and tense. Nice acting all around. Widmark is
excellent. I can still see the scenes where the german advisor stands alone
on the bridge. Then one of the US officers tells Sidney Poitier, "He's not
here with us right now, he's out there with them" Refering to the russian
sub.

Gray Lady Down
Odd and uneven, but in one scene the XO sacrifices himself by holding down a
couple hydraulic actuators.
The water keeps rising over his head but you still see the hands gripping
those actuators.

20000 Leagues under the Sea
Loved every minute, who cares about the fantasy. Mason does a great Nemo.

Ice Station Zebra
Saw this at one of those huge panorama theatres. A couple gripping scenes,
but generally poor plot. the scene where the sub is at 45 degrees down angle
and sinking from the open torpedo tube scared the crap out of me.

Sink the Bismarck
Not great but not bad. Also 633 squadron falls in this group.

Also good but fewer ships
Fail Safe
Dr. Strangelove
All Quiet on the Western Front

Favs in no particular order:

They were Expendable:( Alway a Duke fan)

Sand Pebbles:(Mc Queen at his best, Crenna was great as well the Skipper)

Submarine x-1: (James Cann and the X craft)

Bridges at Toko Ri:(Great all arround, even bought a .30 carbine as a
birthday gift)

Das Boot(directors cut):(Best of the sub flicks)

Midway:(All star cast, but dumb love story)

To sink the Bismark:( classic)

THe BedFord Incident:(quirky, but considering Whitmark died last week,
it fits)

Torpedo Run:( Glen Ford hunting the great white whale( uh, Carrier)

The Hunley:(a odd ball, but can't think of any other Civil war naval flicks?)

Flight of the Intruder(Best line? "Fighter pilots make movies, Bomber
pilots make history.")

And last but not least: Top Gun: (I still feel the need for speed. Thus
the speeding tickets....)

Guilty pleasure: "Under Siege". Yes, it's silly stuff, but it was made
when Steven Seagal was still bankable for theatre releases, Erika
Eleniak takes her top off in an amusingly self-mocking role ("I'm an
_actress!_ I did a Wet'n'Wild video, and a Hunter episode...") Tommy Lee
Jones and Gary Busey chew the scenery to splinters, and the battleship
setting is nicely used.

I am also guilty of enjoying it -- and, yes, Eleniak, Jones and Busey are the

Yeah! And where else you gonna see a bunch of guys fire a

I've always loved (in this and all other "hail of bullets in a steel

Take almost any cops versus baddies movie/tv series:
Cops comprehensively perforate windshield of car full of bad guys running a
roadblock.
The bullets magically dematerialise immediately after penetrating the glass
as none of the goons are hit and the bullets fail to scratch the rear window
or any other part of the interior of the vehicle.

Michael Mann did a good job in "Heat", I thought: where amazingly,
rounds fired at a carful of bad guys actually kill the driver and stop
the vehicle...
