"Flagstaff Hill" Maritime Museum
BERMUDA
Bermuda, given it's strategically important position between the Carribean and
Europe, has a large number of forts, ramparts, and gun emplacements, over 60
total. Most are small with minimal or no information, if they are even accessible.
I have listed the most interesting and informative here.
There are also several shipwrecks visible on the surface or just under, including
former HMS Vixen off the west coast, and the Taifun in St. George's harbor.

The former British naval dockyard has been converted into a large shopping plaza.
In the midst of all the capitalism, there is a museum on the maritime history of
Bermuda, which is, given the geography of Bermuda, a history of Bermuda itself.

St. George's, NE corner of the island
Large fort, built up over the 18th and 19th centuries. There are diorama showing
a brief history of the colonization of Bermuda, the history of the fort, and a
series of displays on the the construction and operation of the fort. There are
also spectacular views of the sea, and a ghost.

Tilikum was sailed from Victoria, BC to England on a westerly course
from 1901 to 1904 by Captain Voss. Trekka circumnavigated the globe
in 1955-1958 - the smallest vessel until that time to do so.

Sackville Corvette
Acadia Oceanographic
Details both Military and Civil Naval Transportation. Sackville is the
last surviving and actively commissioned WWII corvette. Open for tours
all summer. Funds are currently being sought for further restoration of
the engineering spaces. Originally a "short-f'ocsle" corvette, she was
refitted during the war - this alteration is easily seen when inside the
messdeck.
Excellent collection of small boats. Memorabilia from Mont Blanc, a
munitions ship that exploded in 1917 and wiped out downtown Halifax.
Also artifacts from Titanic - some victims were buried in Halifax.

Traditional boats, such as St. Lawrence skiffs and canoes.
Converted from shipbuilding structures. Exhibits on shipbuilding,
underwater archeology. Henry also serves as a bed and breakfast from
late May to Labour Day. Many models, plus workshops and a library.

Ship saw much service in WWII and Korea. Only surviving Tribal class.
Manned by university students, and the current CO (Cdr Willson) served
aboard her as a young officer. She has more battle honours than any Royal
Canadian Naval ship before or since. Still used as a training vessel for
Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, who spend weekends aboard ship, and during the
summer the guns are fired every day at noon. The ship is open as a museum.

This battleship belonged to the Peruvian Navy, but was captured by Chile
during the Pacific War (1879) during the Battle of Angamos. It is one of
the last classic ironclads afloat. Peru is still asking for the return

Sub owned by Estonia, saw action under Soviet flag in WWII.
Built 1936 in England. Both vessels are in the Pirita port
outside Tallinn, while the museum itself is at the north end
of town in a 15th century cannon tower called Paks Magareeta,
or Fat Margaret.

The last Finnish lightship.

Island Fortress, built 1750's. 2 km. from Helsinki Centrum, about 15 min
by ferry. One of the largest sea-fortresses in the world, with some 2,000 guns
and 8,000 men. 20 kilometers of fortifications. Owned by Russians 1808-1917.
Some part of the islands, fortifications and guns from that time period.
Was attacked by England in the Crimean war 1854. Has also served as prison.
There are 700 inhabitants living on the islands. Protected by Unesco.

Just down the road from Bayeux, at the beach. Part of floating harbor
is still there (it's *big*). Small museum with a film, scale models
showing how it was made.

The National Naval and Maritime Museum. This is the primary museum - there
are 9 provincial museums throughout France. There is an extensive library
and sections on the Navy, naval archeology, fisheries, oceanography, water
sports and pleasure craft.
La Bibliotheque du Musee de la Marine (the library) contains over 30,000
volume and 189 periodicals (66 in publication). Open Monday, Wednesday
and Thursday 0930-1715. Call before visiting.

Raised in 1957 by the company Beckedorf, from a position at or near
Flensburg Feuerschiff. He was then placed in shallow waters to make
necessary repairs.
Then he was sold to the shipyard Howaldtswerke for 475,000 DM and towed
to Kiel, where he was completely repaired and refitted by 1958.
After repairs were completed, the boat was given the new Type class 241.
On 1 September 1960 it was named "U Wilhelm Bauer", Nato "Y 880"
Finally, in 1968 he was retired from active military duties.
On 20 May 1970 he was returned to active duty by a civilian
organization for industrial testing, including:
- torpedo firing and testing
- target for sonar detection dests, both active and passive
- boat for use with military swimmers/divers
- duties concerning mines
- testing of pyrotechniques and other counter measures
Multiple accidents (primarily two collisions with destroyers) made repairs
of the boat in 1980 too expensive, so it was decided to retire him on
November 18th, 1980.
On March 15th, 1982 he was finally sold to the Schiffartsmueseum.
Walk-through tours are available.
Parts of submarines on display, such as a TDC and a scope. Many models ships
from sailing ships up to the modern frigates and destroyers of the
Kreigsmarine.
It is advisable to go there between April and October because only in this
period is it possible to visit the ships and the subs, since they are lying
in a harbour basin and therefore are closed for the public when it may be
dangerous to visit them due to weather conditions.

Walk through tour of sub. On land is a memorial for major maritime battles
of WWI, emphasizing the Battle of Skagerak.

Kwajelien Atoll is restricted - US Army's western ICBM test range impact area.
The ship rests upside down on the lagoon side of Ennylabegan Island. The ship
was fully outfitted for the A tests including full fuel load (which still
leaks into the lagoon) and things like plates and dishes (original).
(Yes, I know this is United States territory, but he was a German ship.)
There is apparently an effort to bring her back to Germany, but that's
all I've heard. If it's serious, and has a chance, I'd like to find out
about it.

Check before visiting; when last visited it was still an active training base,
only open Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. It is possible the base might
have been closed or the ship moved since then. Day trip from Athens.

Af-'Al-Pi
The museum is housed mostly in the ship, which ran the British
blockade before WWII to save Jews from Nazi Germany.
The naval portion of the museum has models of current and former
Israeli navy ships, maps and historical displays on wartime activities;
and various memorabilia, including the surrender flag from an Egyptian
frigate that was captured while trying to bombard Haifa in 1956.

Yukizake's anchor and rudder. She was probably the luckiest Japanese
ship of the war - a battle record as long as Enterprise, and hit only
once by a 13mm bullet. She was given to China as reparation, and served
as Tang Yan until she ran around in 1971.
Also, a turret and barbette from BB Mutsu, which blew up in 1943.

Collection dates back to the naval exploits of Barbarossa. Many

and the Republic of Turkey. There is a section of a U-boat that
was recovered from the Black Sea coast.

Self-guided tour of the battleship include hand-held radio listening
devices that give audio background on the ship. There is also a small
section of the bow of the cruiser Fall River. Bounty sails often, so
it may be seen on the river. Hiddensee is a former East German Tarantul
class corvette, and was donated by the US Navy. She was formerly known
as Rudolf Edelhofer.

Last diesel boat produced for the US Navy, once set a record for
crossing the Pacific Ocean underwater and was featured in the 1990 film
"The Hunt for Red October." The ship is being restored to near-working
condition by the Submarine Veterans Blueback Base, who are also adding
mulitmedia presentations (sound tapes and light shows). Children (and adults)
are allowed to touch much of the equipment.
