WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy Richard Danzig sends the
following holiday message to service members: "As families and friends
gather to celebrate this most joyous time of the year, we have a lot
to be proud of. "Here's what we accomplished in 1998: Continuous force
deployments in the Arabian Gulf and peak efforts on three occasions,
including ongoing Cruise missile and TACAIR strikes in Operation
Desert Fox, to keep Saddam Hussein in check; emergency relief to U.S.
embassies in Kenya and Tanzania following terrorist bombings;
evacuation of non-combatants from Eritrea, including over 100
Americans as well as citizens of nine other nations; continued
peacekeeping operations, contingency response planning and displays of
force in the Balkans in the face of continued civil unrest; drug
interdiction operations; disaster relief operations in the
Southeastern U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Honduras,
Nicaragua and Guatemala following hurricanes Georges and Mitch;
humanitarian assistance in Kenya for 200,000 people following
devastating floods; planning for the evacuation of non-combatants from
the Democratic Republic of Congo and Indonesia; humanitarian relief in
southern Italy following mudslides; recovery, packaging and transport
of highly enriched uranium from the nation of Georgia to the United
Kingdom; exercises and port calls on every continent. Wow! "Like so
many years before it, 1998 was a year in which the Navy and Marine
Corps were always there -- everywhere -- for America. From combat
operations to crisis response to small acts of kindness at home,
America is blessed with a Navy-Marine Corps team that never fails to
answer her call. "This is the season to celebrate the spirit of peace.
You are contributing to peace in everything you do. Your presence and
your actions bring hope for peace to a difficult and complex world.
Please be very proud of that. "Our thoughts and prayers are now
focused on our forces in the Arabian Gulf, as well as the families of
those Sailors and Marines back home. For those of you who are now, or
over the course of the year, have been, far away from home and family,
I join all Americans in gratitude for your sacrifice. What you are
doing makes for a better world. Thank you. "God bless you. Have a
happy and safe holiday season."
CNO holiday message to Sailors and Marines
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The following holiday message is being sent to
Sailors and Marines from Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jay L.
Johnson: "As 1998 draws to a close and we approach the new year, Mrs.
Johnson and I wish you all -- Sailors, Marines, civilian personnel and
family members -- the happiest of holidays. I also send my personal BZ
to all those who performed so brilliantly in the past year's
contingencies, ranging from humanitarian missions in Bosnia to
counternarcotics patrols in the Caribbean and combat strikes in the
Arabian Gulf. "Our entire nation is proud of the flawless execution of
Operation Desert Fox. Attacking a wide array of highly challenging
targets over four days of sustained operations, the professionals of
Fifth Fleet vividly demonstrated the superb skill and inspiring
courage that are the hallmark of the United States Navy- Marine Corps
team. "Due to their efforts -- and those of our military and civilian
personnel in every theater -- our families at home give thanks during
this holiday season for a world of enhanced stability and security.
"As we scan the horizon for the turbulence of a new century, it is
clear that we will continue to be called upon; and, because of you, I
know our Navy will be ready. Never forget that you are members of the
greatest Navy the world has ever known, and I am proud to serve
alongside each of you. Thanks for all you do for your navy and your
country. Have a safe, blessed holiday season."
