I am doing a bit of research for a friend of mine who will shortly be
giving a speech about the military. As part of his piece, he plans on
making reference to an incident in which a U.S. Navy submarine deployed
from San Diego, CA with a go-go dancer on the dive plane. If anyone
could tell me the year, the name of the submarine, or the final
disposition of this occurrence, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
in advance!

this is one of those submarine legends-when we first heard of it, in
1981, it was a submarine out of charleston, south carolina. and the
officer of the deck (and instigator) was a young junior officer who
later became the co of uss boston (he was my xo on kamehameha)

don't believe the hype...

I recall an incident in which a dancer named Cat (or Kat?) Futch, or
some similar name, performed on a submarine sail--prior to a
deployment, I think. It's a pretty hazy memory--late '70s or early
'80s sounds like a reasonable guess, and I remember it being in the
Southeast--Charleston, perhaps, or Mayport, FL. The C.O. was relieved
post-haste. I was in the Navy at the time and, despite the lack of
detail recalled, I am fairly sure it was a true incident and real
scandal--one which the Navy handled immediately and decisively, which
may be why, thankfully, it has not remained in the public's eye over
the years.

Your memory is good. Her name WAS Cat Futch, and it was USS FINBACK. I
'think' it was coming out of Norfolk (the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot
printed her bikini-clad promo glossy and a short caption. She
resembled Cheryl Ladd of Charlie's Angels in build, had a 'Farrah-cut'
on the hair, and a LOT of teeth.) I believe the CO hired her to thank
the crew for busting hump on an availability. I don't know if she was
on the sail plane or the afterdeck--I seem to remember it was the
latter. I think she went off in the pilot boat.

I cut the picture out and saved it for several years--I was either
grade 10 or 11, which would make it about 1975-ish.

I believe the CO was relieved. Actually, I think he got a message
after they dived and commenced the transit to turn around and come
back, and he was fired on the pier. There was a short flurry of
national editorial cartoons about it also. Remember, this was the
mid-70s, post-Vietnam military doldrums. The press was up on bashing
the Navy.

And the captain was relieved for cause. What a shame. I'll bet he had

Just out of curiosity...what is your friend's agenda vis-a-vis the military?
Is he anti-military? It just strikes me as a *very odd* incident (if indeed
it deed occur) to include in a "speech about the military"?

What is his purpose in using this alledged incident?

Pete

I *knew* this was coming...

I think her g-strings are all leather. Personally, I believe all such,
eh-hem, exhibitions should be of a more private nature. Somehow or
another I don't think the fecal material would've hit the rotary
oscillator quite so fiercely if this dance had taken place somewhere
inside and not on the boat, ya know? And no, I didn't pack mine...but
that snake is still around here somewhere....just covers what's
necessary....as long as she (the snake) doesn't move.

Finback was departing Fort Lauderdale en route Norfolk. On arrival,
Connie Stevenson was relieved of command. While he sometimes

Shit, this happened all the time in Groton, except it wasn't on the
boat. Fleet hogs would come out and flash us (or sometimes strip) on
the AMTRAK bridge, the (usta be in Groton, now New London) Lorlei, the
old Croaker pier, and any other damn place a female could find a place
to stand in view of the boat. Funny as hell. Lookout used to call 'New
contact, bearing XXX, range XXX, contact appears to be a large
biologic'. Every once in a while the lookout would amend the above
call with 'Damn, I know her'.

I presume you're comparing this to the disciplinary actions or lack
thereof for the recent spate of US Navy ship collisions?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Finback_(SSN-670)

The Go Go Dance

On 10 July 1975, the captain of the Finback permitted a topless farewell
dance to be performed on the diving plane of the sail by a local go-go
dancer known as Cat Futch (Cathy Susan Futch[1]) as the vessel departed
Port Canaveral, Florida. On 1 August 1975, when the Navy brass learned
of the incident, the submarine was ordered back to port and the captain
was relieved of his command,[2] "pending the investigation of an
incident of a non-operational nature."[3] The captain, Cdr. Connelly D.
Stevenson, 41, gave permission for the act as a reward for performance
by his crew during a major overhaul at the Naval shipyard in Portsmouth,
Virginia, the preceding year which cut two months off of a scheduled 12-
month overhaul at considerable savings to the government. Stevenson was
seeking to be reinstated in his command and said that he did not know
how the incident had leaked to the media. "I'm in the middle of Navy
proceedings in my behalf and I'm already concerned that the press just
has not done my cause any good and it's certainly my intention not to
continue the press activity," he stated in a 9 September 1975 Washington
Post report that publicly broke the incident.[4]

Ultimately, Admiral James L. Holloway III, Chief of Naval Operations, on
2 October 1975, found the former commander of Finback "guilty of
permitting an action, which could have distracted the attention of those
responsible for the safe navigation of the nuclear-powered submarine
maneuvering in restricted waters." Holloway agreed with subordinates
that Stevenson had failed to exercise good judgement and did not follow
regulations governing civilian visitors to naval vessels. Stevenson's
next assignment was to the Naval Research Laboratory in London, and
although technically still eligible for the promotion list such
consideration was unlikely under the circumstances and he subsequently
left active duty.[5]

An article in the February 2010 issue of Naval History, published by the
United States Naval Institute, Annapolis, Maryland, categorizes this
episode as "one of the most notorious incidents in the history of the
Navy's nuclear-powered submarine force."

Cathy Susan Futch, aka Cat Futch. From Titusville, Fl
She was the infamous dancer on the bow of the sub, USS Finback as it departed Port Canerval, Fl on deployment.
She was born in 1958, and died in 1998, at 40 years old, no cause of death listed.
What few know, she felt the notoriety ruined her life, and she felt very badly for the Skipper of the Sub who was relieved of his command, and later left the Navy. She thought joining the Marine Corps would change her life, I met her during Recruit training at Parris Island, however she dropped out almost immediately. She was a nice, sweet girl, but troubled.
What was not printed was that she was just 18 years old at the time.
