this is one of those submarine legends-when we first heard of it, in
1981, it was a submarine out of charleston, south carolina. and the
officer of the deck (and instigator) was a young junior officer who
later became the co of uss boston (he was my xo on kamehameha)

I recall an incident in which a dancer named Cat (or Kat?) Futch, or
some similar name, performed on a submarine sail--prior to a
deployment, I think. It's a pretty hazy memory--late '70s or early
'80s sounds like a reasonable guess, and I remember it being in the
Southeast--Charleston, perhaps, or Mayport, FL. The C.O. was relieved
post-haste. I was in the Navy at the time and, despite the lack of
detail recalled, I am fairly sure it was a true incident and real
scandal--one which the Navy handled immediately and decisively, which
may be why, thankfully, it has not remained in the public's eye over
the years.

Your memory is good. Her name WAS Cat Futch, and it was USS FINBACK. I
'think' it was coming out of Norfolk (the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot
printed her bikini-clad promo glossy and a short caption. She
resembled Cheryl Ladd of Charlie's Angels in build, had a 'Farrah-cut'
on the hair, and a LOT of teeth.) I believe the CO hired her to thank
the crew for busting hump on an availability. I don't know if she was
on the sail plane or the afterdeck--I seem to remember it was the
latter. I think she went off in the pilot boat.
I cut the picture out and saved it for several years--I was either
grade 10 or 11, which would make it about 1975-ish.
I believe the CO was relieved. Actually, I think he got a message
after they dived and commenced the transit to turn around and come
back, and he was fired on the pier. There was a short flurry of
national editorial cartoons about it also. Remember, this was the
mid-70s, post-Vietnam military doldrums. The press was up on bashing
the Navy.

Sounds like a great way to get underway. Didja pack a g-string and

And the captain was relieved for cause. What a shame. I'll bet he had
a crew that would do anything, go anywhere for him.

Just out of curiosity...what is your friend's agenda vis-a-vis the military?
Is he anti-military? It just strikes me as a *very odd* incident (if indeed
it deed occur) to include in a "speech about the military"?
What is his purpose in using this alledged incident?

I *knew* this was coming...
I think her g-strings are all leather. Personally, I believe all such,
eh-hem, exhibitions should be of a more private nature. Somehow or
another I don't think the fecal material would've hit the rotary
oscillator quite so fiercely if this dance had taken place somewhere
inside and not on the boat, ya know? And no, I didn't pack mine...but
that snake is still around here somewhere....just covers what's
necessary....as long as she (the snake) doesn't move.

The State Representative for this district (Melbourne Fla) is _Howard
Futch_(good guy). Anyone know if there's a relationship?
In politics, sincerity is everything.
If you learn to fake that, you've got it made.

Go on then. What happened in the crew's mess? You can't leave us in

Shit, this happened all the time in Groton, except it wasn't on the
boat. Fleet hogs would come out and flash us (or sometimes strip) on
the AMTRAK bridge, the (usta be in Groton, now New London) Lorlei, the
old Croaker pier, and any other damn place a female could find a place
to stand in view of the boat. Funny as hell. Lookout used to call 'New
contact, bearing XXX, range XXX, contact appears to be a large
biologic'. Every once in a while the lookout would amend the above
call with 'Damn, I know her'.

Well, she did typical stripper things to typical sailors in the typical

Oh, is that all? I thought she must have managed something really
startling to get the CO canned... :)
(depends on your definition of "typical stripper" and "typical sailor",
I guess)
