One think I don't like about wearing glasses is that they distort my
face, I have really high myopia and the lenses have a definite
minimizing effect and make my face and eyes look small and distorted.

Are there any types of lenses available for nearsighted people that do
not have this minimizing effect? I know, I know... I'm being vain, but
I'm a bit tired of people saying, "you look way better without your
glasses" and all the Mr. Magoo comments. The last time I purchased
lenses I was convinced by Seiko's pamphlet that claimed "It's aspheric
design alleviates the "raccoon eye effect", or reduction in the size of
a patients eyes, that occurs with thick, spherical lenses". So I bought
the Seiko lenses and bascially that statement was pure bullshit as the
minimizing and distorting effect was as bad as ever...

thanks

JM,

aspheric designs do help cut down on the effect but once you reach a certian
point of curvature than there isn't anything or anyone that is going to make a
difference...unless you can find someone that has figured out how to change
the laws of physics...
but atleast with an asheric design and a higher index your depth peception is
improved and there is some effect on the minnification...but don't expect
miracles!!ha ha
thats almost as bad as people are trying on frames and they have the demo's
in them and than when they get the RX they wonder why there -8 are not as thin
as the demo's!!ha ha

when you grind power into a lense three things effect the amount of
occular curvature...the rx, the base curve, the index of the material you are
using....not much anyone can do to help eliminate that ...other than going to
a educated dispenser that knows the best otpions and how to fit and sell the
best frame for the rx and a lab that understands what they are doing..ha ha

e-m me your rx and maybe i can give you a few otpions that your optician may
have missed....

tata for now.....

I'm not an eyecare professional, but I can say that light is light. If
lenses are to work, they must bend light rays (refraction) to have the
focussing effect that they do. And what focusses ONE direction,
focusses the OPPOSITE direction as well. It's just one of the
unfortunate factors of high diopter glasses. What diopterage are you
wearing? You might try tinted lenses to hide your face and eyes a bit.

Actually, you're dealing with body image issues, here. You (and the
majority of society) are in the mindset that we need to look like 'this'
or 'that' or we're less than proper. Feh! We should be on our knees
grateful that glasses exist! Two hundred years ago, we would've been
hoplessly blind.

*THERE* is the crux of the issue!!! Tell these pseudo "friends" to F*ck
off, eat sh*t and DIE! It's like some ratb*stard telling a wheelchair
user "Gee, I wish you were taller... I hate to stare down at you all the
time." And as for the Magoo comments... THIS IS EXACTLY WHY THE
NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND IS FIGHTING WALT DISNEY!!! You have
*proven* our case that negative stereotypes are harmful! You sound like
a good, intelligent, effective person. You are a useful, contributing
member of society and some lamebrained, narrowminded, useless git of a
semi human is making you feel 'wrong' for wearing corrective lenses!
Such people ought to be lined up and shot like rabbits! THEY are the
reason otherwise intelligent people refuse to wear glasses, resort to
dangerous surgeries, wear contacts and risk damage and pay top dollar
for substandard services! Don't take this sh*t off ANYONE!!

They're PREYING on you!! Note the cute little phrasr "Raccoon eye
effect" to make you feel insecure! How many people have gone out and
bought dangerous concoctions because of ads worrying about 'feminine
odor' or 'split ends' when such things are normal, nautral effects of
living in a body?? You're being SOLD, Honey, and sold hard! The sooner
you let go of the teat of Madison Avenue, the better. You look just
fine, and even if you don't like the way you look, you have the right to
wear any damn thong you want and anyone who bashes you about it ought to
be kneecapped and flung into the Bay!

And it always WILL be! Crutches make a person look spidery. Wheelchairs
make us look short. Glasses make us look different facially and
prosthetic limbs aren't fully 'natural', but, dammit, anyone
'commenting' on such things is a horse's *ss and has NO business among
decent people. tell 'em to buzz off!

You are beautiful!! We ALL are!

Swan!

Which would we rather have? "Raccoon eyes" or an incorrectable, blinding
condition?!? F*CK the public!

You don't mention your RX, but one option you may want to explore is called
a "myodisc". The back surface of your lenses is steeply curved, right? To
make a myodisc, a flatter curve (either concave or convex) is ground with
its apex well behind that of the Rx curve - creating a bowl. If a convex
curve is used, the edges of your lenses could actually be very thin.

However - these lenses tend to look a little odd in their own way.

If your myopia is really excessive - like -10D or more, I'd strongly advise
you to try contact lenses. Depending on your Rx, you might end up wearing
glasses over these to correct such residual astigmatism as may be present,
and/or for reading. In any case, all other things being equal, you'll get
better vision.

I understand your problem with the distortion.. my prescription is approx. +28,
and the magnification of the lenses makes my face look like it has no end!
You can only see my eyes if you're looking almost directly at me ...otherwise,
if i turn my head, you just see the thickness of the lenses, bulging WAY out
of the frames.
