Hi to all optometrists and opticians out there, would like an opinion
on the relative merits of the Hoya 1.71 and the Nikon 1.74 High Index
lenses. I have a pair of half frames which make it imperative that I
get thin lenses since my power is about 650 -175 astig 15 angle and
450 -175 astig 160 angle. I had originally settled on the Hoya 1.71
as I have been using Hoya for years but upon inspecting the uncut
lenses, found that they have a yellowish tinge very obvious from the
edges and was told that Hoya has increased the UV protection to 100%
from 50% making this the cause. This would be fairly obvious with all
rimless or half frames so unfortunately it may rule the Hoya's out.
The next altenative are the Nikon 1.74's which I have no experience
with - they are more costly albeit thinner and I'm unsure about the
hardiness of coating and if they will be yellowish too. How much US$
can I expect to pay for them?

Any feedback much appreciated urgently.

Thanks

Any lens over 1.7 index is going to be very brittle. My experiences are
with Pentax 1.66 lenses with A/R coating. These lenses are very thin and
polish very well. However if you want to stay with the Hoya lenses, have
you considered an edge polish? Once you take away the dull edge the color
is not nearly as noticeable. As far as price goes the Pentax runs about
$300 and I am not sure how much the Nikon lenses will be but I would guess
around $350-$400 for single vision.

I've found a few online stores, haven't checked localled yet, that offer 1.66
High Index lenses for around $150, so they can be bought for less than $300
which is what you mentioned Lenscrafters charges.

Also I heard it is not recommended you get the edges polished as it increases
reflections.

I don't have experience with half lenses, but I would imagine that the
polished edges would be even worse on those than on full lenses. I have had
hi index plastic single vision lenses with polished edges, around -6.5 on
both, and I did not like them at all. I never get polished edges anymore.

Hi,
I was just wondering about the 1.66 lenses you got, how much thinner are they
compared to 1.60 high index (which is what they normally use right)? Sounds
like they are charging double so I'm wondering how much of an improvement there
is.
