LeLeche League - it's a support group that helps with women who are
breast-feeding. It should be listed in your phone book.

Well, this is interesting. I looked in the phone book and it wasn't there
under any spelling. However, I put all three spellings posted (including
mine which was a total guess) and all three bring up sites.

Now, I am inclined to go with the LaLeche spelling, only because they have a
URL with that spelling.

This is a case where right after I posted the word, I took a shot at my
(total guess) spelling and it turned up sites, so I am glad I didn't just go
with that spelling thinking it was correct.

Thanks a bunch for your help.

that is correct....leche is milk in spanish (feminine noun hence the
feminine article, la, in front of it). I only took a year of spanish and
that's one of the few things I remember! :o)

La Leche League, a breastfeeding advocacy group that also tends to
sometimes support some eccentric parenting methods, like having your
children sleep in your own bed and letting your child nurse until they
go off to school, etc.

Wow, I only took a year of Spanish after 8 years of French (at my
mother's demand) and the only thing I will admit to knowing how to say
in Spanish -- that isn't corrupted with any French -- is what's most
important -- Donde esta los banos?

Did anyone happen to see Nathan Lane on Regis and Kathie Lee this AM. It was
just too funny.

Some idiot implanted breast implants into a woman's derriere, so then she was
sitting on her nips and then the difficulty of breastfeeding in this position
also came up. It was quite funny, too bad for the poor woman that it happened
to. Why are we getting such crazy physicians. Remember the doc who carved his
initials in the patient's abdomen.

She is Melinda. They haven't found a replacement for her that she will agree

better than her.

Yes exactly. Militant breastfeeders is what I call them. You should hear
them talk about it on my mother's ng. They wear the baby 24/7, sleep with
them, nurse around the clock. This is now called Attatchement Parenting. I
call it exhausting.

LOL, Melinda! That is one I learned for our recent trip to Mexico, and turns
out it came in real handy, since I got very sick. My daughter (who is going
to school in Queretaro for three months) told me that if I was really
desperate, to go to a shop keeper and say the above phrase and then look
into their eyes, and say pleadingly and slowly..." POR FAVOR!!!" hahaha. At
the banos they were selling TP, 5 squares for 1 peso. I threw the lady 10
pesos and grabbed up what she had.

BTW, Spanish expertes... Is it Donde esta los banos, or Donde esta el banos?

They wear the baby 24/7, sleep with
> them, nurse around the clock. This is now called Attatchement Parenting. I

ahem... I must jump in here, since I was a La Leche League leader in my
past. I did not wear the baby 24/7, and I did not nurse around the clock. My
babies/children slept with me whenever it was convenient to do so. They did
not nurse until they went off to school. I had people harrassing me when Meg
was 2 years old and very dependent on me... they wanted me to shove her off
to daycare somewhere so she would be "independent." When she went to first
grade her teacher asked me where I had sent her to kindergarten because she
was very socially advanced and independent for a 6-year-old. When I told her
that she had not gone to kindergarten she was so shocked. Imagine! A child
learning social skills and self confidence at home with her family!

My point is... not all people who believe that breastfeeding is best (and
not just because it is nutritionally superior), and who attend La Leche
League meetings are weirdos. Some are, some aren't. I may be an arrogant
pissant, but I am not a weirdo. And my kids did not turn into sexual
perverts because they slept with us when they needed to.

Yes, some people who attend La Leche League meetings are... odd, but it is
an open meeting and you can't really tell someone not to attend because you
don't like them. But the majority of them are wonderful mothers who are just
loving their kids and doing what they think is best. If it's not for you,
then by all means skip it, but they gave me lots of support when I needed
it, and they supported what I felt were my basic mothering instincts instead
of telling me that what I was feeling was wrong.

OK, flame away...

Kathy, the arrogant pissant lives on.

I want to learn Spanish very much so now that I am living in Las Vegas. I
hear Spanish all day long, and it would be very easy to converse.

I had four or five years of German in high school (when my "oma" was still
alive) but don't remember too much, remember the very complex genders having
to be conjugated. I speak Polish what I learned from my grandparents and
my stay in Poland.

Can anyone recommend an online Spanish course or a good teach-yourself
course?

Save those pennies and go to Guatemala for a 2 month submersion program with
me. We could say we were married and may be get a discount. That part isn't
the expensive part, actually it is quite cheap. I think may be 600 for the two
months which includes living arrangements and food. The big problemo is going
dos months without an American salary.

I am going to do this, in between filling in with my MTSO sitting business.

LOL! Thanks, Cindy for not "warring." My observance over the past 50 years,
for what it's worth: I have known parents of all sorts and kinds, and they
get all kinds of "outcomes" with their children (all sorts and kinds). So,
I'll not rake anyone over the coals for not doing it my preferred way. But,
I do get defensive if anyone doesn't show "my way" the same courtesy. (I
don't think that was done here, BTW).

Here's another one of my observances and wise sayings <G>:
Parenting is very difficult. 99.9% of parents are doing the best they can at
the time. That's it. We're all doing the best we can. And for myself, I
*try* to support and give positive feedback to young parents when I can
because I can still remember those days... and how much I appreciated a kind
word. (I was a very different parent to my now-30-year-old son than I was
to my 20-year-old daughter -- being 19 when my son was born, but in both
cases I did the best I could do at the time).

So, I appreciate no "whose the better parent" war here. <g>

No, no. I am sorry. I didn't mean to start a discussion about who does what
and who is better. I get enough of that on the mother's ng. I really was
just stating what some of the moms on the ng who are into AP (attachment
parenting) are doing. They are wearing the baby 24/7, nursing around the
clock and so on. Sorry, if you took it that I thought it was a bad thing.
There are aspect of AP that I follow, I just didn't breastfeed mine. Sorry

DOn't get me started. I had difficulty nursing and it was very hard for me to
accept that. A relative who is Ms. Gung-Ho mother type said something like
Anyone who wants to can. Of course she had numerous miscarriages, etc. Wonder
how she would have felt if I had retorted that anyone who really wants a baby
would be able to carry it (had not one iota of trouble there).

I know how you feel, Rae. I tried to nurse my first son, and did so for
maybe a month or six weeks, but then my milk just went away, and it was very
hard to accept. In later years I found out why my milk disappeared, but at
the time I had no clue, and I thought I was doing everything right. The will
to nurse has nothing to do with it. There are too many other things to
factor in. I'm sorry that there are such insensitive (or maybe just dumb)
people in the world. Perhaps a better analogy (concerning your friend) would
be if you had said to her, "oh well, you can always have another one," or
"it's a good thing you lost it now instead of later." Such hurtful,
unnecessary things to say to a person! Just as what she said to you was
hurtful and unnecessary.

I'll carry your baggage! lol That's where you will learn the "true"
spanish! Any course, of course, will teach you the proper way to conjugate,
etc but *living* the language is the best way to learn it! Spanish is very
easy.....everything has to agree in number and gender.....unlike English, a
most confusing language. Maybe a basics course then go for the Guatemala

Cindy, By any chance, did you start taking the birth control pill around 4-6
months postpartum?

Rae, All of the above probably contributed to it... I know the reason I
couldn't nurse was because of really bad advice from the doctor, and who was
I to question him??? I wish I had known someone at that time who actually
*knew* something about breastfeeding, and could have helped me. But it's
water under the bridge now. The *bottle experience* was horrible, with milk
allergies and on and on... It could have all been prevented with just a
little *help from a friend* so to speak. Which is why I became a LLL
leader... not to *recruit* every pregnant woman within 100 miles, but to
help other women who just needed some good advice like I had needed.

Well, I couldn't nurse my firstborn and had no problem at all nursing the
second. My pediatrician told me that the extra stress the baby and I were
going through with trying to nurse when I had my older daughter just wasn't
worth it (I was only 16 when I had my oldest child). Both girls have turned
out to be responsible, loving, healthy people, and I can't say I see a lot
of difference these days based on who was nursed and who wasn't. Far be it
from me to criticize someone for making the choice that is right for them!

Anne,

In this country, people think about it TOO much. I wonder how many tribal women
in Africa or people in any rural third-world country ever have a problem
nursing if they have adequate nutrition. I'm betting not many. Many of our
generation didn't grow up seeing it done. There it is just a given fact. They
don't have people saying you are feeding too often or not often enough. Baby
cries, it goes to the breast. Period. No one agonizes over the fact it is still
nursing at age x (fill in the age any one person here finds it disgusting).

Well, someone mentioned pesos for so many sheets (? of Toilet Paper). Having
been to Europe/Germany, you will find bathroom attendants who will expect a
tip. I believe they dole out the TP. Not like here where you go in, unattended
and have a roll or two at your complete disposal.

not to mention using a whole roll when it gets stuck to the bottom of your
shoe and you have a TP trail following you! LOL

think how much that would cost in Mexico!!!>.

I recall having a roll in my carryon type bag. Nothing worse than not enough
TP.

Yes, I did with the exception of Bailey, I don't remember though with her but I
did with the others. Ah ha!

Janice, if you ever to decide to go to Brazil, please let me know. My oldest

My sister is a LLL leader, and although I don't agree with all her philosophies
about child-rearing, I've listened to her end of many phone conversations with
brand-new moms and am always amazed at the calm, supporting presence she offers
to these scared women who are getting all sorts of bad advice from their
doctors. She is a welcome alternative to all that.

How did "word help" turn into a discourse on the wonders of toilet paper??!!

Again, I ask in all sincerity, *someone* please change the title of the thread
once in a while!! :))

Muchas gracias,
