I am currently enrolled in Cittone Institute for Medical Transcription
and I graduate in July. We take dictations on the stenotype machine
which is connected to a PC. The placement service in the school
doesn't seem to up front with the students. When we graduate in July
we are supposed to be Medical Transcriptionists. Is anyone out there
using a Stenotype Machine (same machine as a court reporter) for
medical transcription. The AAMT doesn't know anything about it.

Thank you

Tracy

What a surprise!

Seriously, I don't know anything about this, but it sounds like a plan. I
have talked to a court reporter who somehow is able to input her
stenomachine stuff into WP, but it didn't come out perfectly formatted or
anything. My question would be how does it come out. Is it perfectly
formatted or do you have to do extensive editing? If you have to do
extensive editing, is time still saved over having transcribed it in the
customary fashion with a keyboard and word processing software. This is
very interesting, but, of course, it would entail a lot of study and
investment. I understand that equipment isn't cheap.

Hi GB,

Having studied court reporting for a few years and owning a Stenotype
machine, I am able to see several uses for it in medical transcription.
Overall, I still think transcribing from recorded voice is far preferable.
What purpose do you have in mind?

There is a company called something like RapidText in Orange County, CA
that does this. I had a demo of it, and unfortunately, the error level I
noticed during the demo (by an experienced transcriptionist who uses this
method) made me grateful for my error-free shorthand capability using good
old DOS/keyboard (Kinesis). I hope your program works better.

Uuhhh.... No one I know is using one. Have you checked with past
graduates of your school. If they are pumping enough grads trained on
steno machines out into the local economy, maybe locally companies are set
up for that.

Here are a few sources for you:

See articles on MT Daily by an MT using Steno.
http://www/angelfire.com/mt1/steno.html

Write me Email and I'll give you phone number for MT using RapidText

Carolyn Frye of MeTS in California is experimenting with this, along
with several students. See this page for her email address:
http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/mets.html

I compared statistics, found no one using steno or RapidText going
faster than some of us using Smartype are going. Much longer learning
curve too. But if you already have the training and own the machine,
go for it!

I have seen a former court reporter using her steno machine for medical
transcription. She was doing fine with it.
