Ok, I have seen a few people lately talking about Speed type. I recently
attended a seminar and saw a display on it, but still was not totally sold on
it. I am not sure, but I seem to recall that it does NOT show you the
abbreviation choices, like Smartype does? Has anybody switched from Smartype
to Speed type? I am STILL trying to find a comparable product, having
purchased IT, new Smartype (yes, you were ALL right! WARNING! WARNING! that
does not compute!), the newest versions of Word and Word Perfect, and am STILL
typing in WP5.1 with ST, because Nobody Does It Better. But this morning,
somebody accidentally shut my computer off and it took me almost an HOUR to get
it running again, the stark reminder of why I am so DESPERATELY trying to find
a DECENT replacement (I have the new computer with all the above-named products
loaded, even converted my macros and lists from ST for use in IT, just that
everything is so much SLOWER in the new Windows programs!)

I have read with interest the postings on Speed type, but don't think I have
seen anybody who used to use ST talking about it. Any input? Info? Happy
users? I know time is going to catch up to me soon, and I will be stuck here
with a day's work on my computer and no way to access it! which almost
happened today! Yikes.

Any info is greatly appreciated! Going off now to try and figure out how to
get this ole doggie up and running again. No, the hammer trick didn't work
last time, either!!

Does your new computer run Win98? If so, there is no reason why WP51/ST
shouldn't run on it. It runs on mine just fine and dandy...

Not on mine, probably because I refuse to work without my Stedman's
Electronic Dictionary. That's why I stay on my 7-year old trusty
workhorse (knocking on wood) instead of moving to the newer machine.

No, the new one has Win ME and it won't work on that. I got the new computer
because I might have to do work over the 'net, using foot pedals via sound
card, and that technology requires the speed and newer OS of the new
computer...but I'll be danged if I can force myself to work that slow! I can't
believe it...the new computer is a 1.3 GHZ!!!! and my old 166 Mhz can out-type
it. I can't believe how long it takes to sit there and wait for some things on
the newer one. Now, those of you who work w/ ST know what I mean...it has
nothing to do with how the system is set up or anything like that...DOS just
did it right. I have been told you can set the new one up with a separate
partition for DOS, but that would still not be a complete fix, as the foot
pedal stuff requires the other OS...so I keep waiting for something in Win that
gives us the speed of DOS.

Thanks. At least I know I am not alone in my search!

Have you looked at Ed Mendelson's site? There's information about getting 5.1
to work in ME there. Good luck.

I've never used Smartype, but I have just started using SpeedType, and I like
it pretty well so far. I was using abbreviate for Windows, but that won't let
you put formatting commands into your text, and SpeedType does allow that. The
abbreviations do pop up on the screen while I'm typing, but this is a feature I
haven't had before (used to use PRD, then abbreviate), so I'm not sure what use
I will make of it. It's also easier to go back and find a certain short form
in SpeedType than it is in abbreviate.

As Mike DeTuri pointed out here earlier, there is another program called
Shorthand, which seems to be exactly the same as SpeedType, and about 50 bucks
cheaper. You might go to their site and see if they have the features you
want. I think you can do a free download trial version. Happy hunting!

Jody,

If it is the SPEED that is the problem, maybe
you should bite the bullet and go with one of the
other expanders. I have used AutoCorrect, QuickCorrect,
As-U-Type and Shorthand and all of them perform at
least as fast has DOS-based expanders for WP51.

I was a diehard WP51 fan, and finally made the switch in
the fall of 1999. I have never been happier. :-)

Well, Ed, as I said, I DID buy some of the other expanders, as well as newer
versions of word processing programs. There really is no comparison. Don't
know if you ever used ST or not, but it, too, was a thing of beauty. Now, I
CAME from the Word6 world and had to be converted, so you know what that means!
Yes, converts DO die hard! LOL. I went mucking about in WP10 last night
(yes, some people are surprised to find that it is up to 10 now! I apparently
got it the week it came out, some time ago) and IT, and figure if I have to,
that is the combo I will use....I just keep hoping something is out there that
does all of the intuitive things that ST did so well. Most people who have
used it would never let you "pry it from their dead, cold fingers." (I don't
remember who says that, but I always laugh, because I know the feeling!)

Thanks anyway, though. I guess I will have to bite the bullet yet, and get
onto that other computer more often!

To all of you 5.1 diehard fans... a RESPECTFUL reality check. It was
the chief engineer at Lockheed Aerospace (same person who designed the
SR-71 Spy plane)who said "if it it ain't broken why fix it"
The problem is that wp 5.1 is an almost 15 year old program maybe
more, that is archeic by today's standards. Change is difficult in
most instances in life, but change is good, (most of the time). I was
reluctant to change to a newer Word Windows 3.1 back then, it took me
some time, but when I did, I was glad I did and said to myself why
didn't I change before?
From an MT standard:
Newer Word Perfect 8.0 & Word 2000 provide:
Faster applications, easier to use, more powerful macros, no need to
memorize so many complicated codes, a more user friendly application,
more intuitive to use, many, many more things to do, a built in
accelerator and text expander, autocomplete features, did I mention
that it runs faster, plus these new applications give our tired eyes a
break from that lovely and tiring blue we all came to love or hate for
that matter. Take a chance, ask anybody that has made the change,
give it a try...and if you do not like it, I guess 5.1 will always be
there.....just a suggestion of course. WP5.1 fans, please do not send
me any hate mail or PC viruses for that matter....:)It is your call in
the end..

WP5.1 is also bulletproof, never crashes, never gets memory overloaded,
etc., etc., etc.

They also require a current computer, and the newer OS's have much more
problems. I have to reinstall Win98 every couple of months. I had to
reinstall Win95 every month, and when I use Word regularly I have to
reinstall it every month or two as well.

They also require extensive mouse use, whereas anything can be done on
WP51 with keystrokes. I can type Shift-F8,P,H,A,E and be editing a
header long before I can get my mouse and go to the header field in
Word.

Huh? I don't have blue on my WP screen and haven't had it ever since I
went to class and learned how to type Shift-F,D,C,E

I still use WP51 and will continue to do so. For most situations there is no
reason not to. I am, for example, doing work for a friend who uses Word. Word
imports the Wp51 files flawlessly for her to print. The only tiny glitch was an
adjustment in my tab settings so they would come out right on her end.

What those who think we are living in the past might not realize is that when
you're an expert at macros and have a shortcut program that does not convert to
Windows, you'd lose a ton trying to compensate.

have used newer word processors, and I'm here to tell you, newer definitely

One of the FEW things I don't like about WP5.1 is that there are only
two screens. When I'm working on my orthopedics account, I keep one
screen open for letters, and the other open for notes. But then he'll
dictate a new patient summary and I have to save the notes in order to
open a screen for the summary. And then he'll need the occasional
envelope for the referring doc who's not at the hospital, and I'll have
to save the notes again and type the envelope.

But this is a minor inconvenience, certainly not enough to tempt me OUT
of WP51!!!

Isn't 6.1 just like 6.0 without the glitches? I have 6.0 but only use
it if I'm creating letterhead or need something fancy that 5.2 can't
do. Otherwise, I don't like it...for one, I never could get my Stedmans

I used 5.1 until a few years ago when I needed to use 6.0 DOS. I was amazed
at how much better it was for transcription. A friend, however, had 6.1 for
Windows and it was absolutely terrible. I've never used more than four, but
I believe I can get six with mine. I'm able to do everything with 6.0 that
I did with 5.1. Maybe I just don't need the same things as others, but I
would hate to give up my 6.0 now. My Stedman's works fine, but I really
hate that they aren't supporting DOS anymore.

I started out doing transcription with WP 5.1. Our business finally had to
upgrade to Corel WP Suite 8 and I truly miss the "good ol' days." However,
I was able to fix my function keys to match those of WP 6.1 and that helped
tremendously (as they are similar to the WP 5.1 function keys). I've been
using the Windows version for a few years now and I've managed to come up
with enough short cuts to exceed my pay from my WP 5.1 days, but it was slow
going at first. I occasionally have the problem of my computer not keeping
up with my typing, especially as the day goes on, but all-in-all, I believe
I've been able to adapt well enough. Now if I try to type in Word....
that's a different story altogether <g>

A little-known trick -- make a completely different directory for

As you should! Just don't make an extra ones by delaying! In all seriousness,
there is just about nothing macros in WP51 can't do. They are quite versatile -
and I am not even anywhere near as good as someone like Mitzi Ponce or Mike
Deturi. I truly believe most people can't even imagine the savings in time
macros can give you with any repetitive tasks: typing logs, envelopes, template
fill in, and on and on.

The way I read Julie's post, she's actually opening WP twice. This is
different from creating subdirectories for different clients, which I've done

I don't mean to answer for Julie, but I also run multiple copies of WP5.1 at
once. The way I've done it is to create a new directory (I call it WP51b but
you could name it however you like). Then, copy everything from the WP51
directory into the newly-created directory. I also have created desktop
icons that I use for starting both my expander program and then WP and then,
upon exiting WP, it copies files to my Zip drive so I always have a backup.
Now that I know how to make the screens different colors, I've also changed
them so as to make it less confusing as to which program I'm running.

Make a copy of your entire c:\wp51 directory on your HDD and call it
something like c:\wp51two. Then rename the wp.exe file inside it to be
something like wptwo.

Then open one DOS box, switch to wp51 directory, and execute WP. Open
another DOS box, switch to wp51two directory, and execute wptwo.

You may have to make two copies of your abbreviation software if you
want to run it in both boxes as well. Same procedure.

Any questions?

You going to be in LA this week? I will be at Staples Center on 11-4, which I
believe is Saturday in case you are going to be here that long. Or are you
also coming to the desert?

Teaching both of us could kill more than two birds.

Well maybe if Julie never answers and it gets really really really cold this
winter, you could be bribed to visit the land of fruits and nuts where it will
be 80 in February.

Me neither, Liz. I've upgraded to a princely 64 megs, I think (I shouldn't
throw those techie terms around when I have no idea what they mean but I think
the package said 32 on it and I had 32 already).

You have some nerve. What are you going to do if I actually do install ST Ms.

Didn't I tell you that the hole in the pipe seems to have been bunged up so no
more kitchen pond? I have a suspicion that all the missing plastic bags that
disappear during the night fixed the problem. Now go ahead and install ST.

Or better yet, what if you learn how to use it without having had to

I am currently forced to learn WP9 over the weekend, so we will see how I do

Janice, we have more in common than I thought! I had ST at least 3
months before I finally installed it, and then waited another three
months before trying it, before realizing that I was never really going
to have the time it took to learn it. So I uninstalled, and eventually
sold it (for less than half of what I paid, I might add!) I was using
ExplodeIt! at the time and was happy with it...and still am, BTW.

And if you will remember it is me who connected you with the buyer. At that
time I really believed that I was going to learn it. Well I guess I still have
dreams that I might, so will hold on to mine.

See we really are sisters.

Why not? A fresh block gets allocated to each open DOS window, right?

Although there are other things I've found that I don't particularly care
for, one of my major complaints about Word is that I'm stuck with that white
background, which is NOT easier on my eyes than WP51's choices! I didn't
like the blue screen either, but the colors in WP51 can be changed so
easily, you can have just about any combination you like. I, for one,
prefer a gray screen with blue type. It rarely makes my eyes ache, but I
can't find that as an option in Word.

You can change your background by reverse-clicking on your wallpaper,
going to Properties, selecting the Appearance tab, and changing the
"window" color. Mine is a lovely ecru color that is easy to see but
also easy on the eyes.

It's not specifically an option in Word, but you can set the color scheme
for your desktop to change the color in all open windows, so you can have a
restful grey background in them all. Right click on the desktop, and go to
Properties>Appearance. Change the colors for Window Text and Window to your
choice, and that is what you will get, not only in Word, but in Explorer,
Outlook, and everything else. I made a very light soft green gray custom
color for the Window background, which is very restful, and blends with the
rest of my color scheme, and left the type black, but you can use anything
that works for you.

I had found that option once upon a time, but I'm also a graphics nut and
have spent a lot of time customizing my desktop; I really don't want to
change the whole darned thing just to change the color of my Word
background. I guess if I ever have to use Word for my day-to-day work, I'll
feel differently, but for now, WP51 is fine, and I can have my desktop the
way I want it too!

No, changing the window background only changes the background color inside
each window. Your wallpaper stays the same; the other colors in your desktop
color scheme stay the same. I appreciate that you don't want to change a
color scheme that you've customized to suit you, and as long as you work in
WP5.1, you don't have to change anything. If you want to give your eyes a
rest in Word or elsewhere in Windows, I imagine there is some very pastel
background color that will work with your current desktop color scheme, and
still give your eyes a rest. I've used various pale shades of grey, cream,
yellow, blue, green, etc., over the years, depending on what my desktop
color scheme was. I've also used some different text colors, but these days
my aged eyes seem to work best on black with a soft background color.
