They're changing the colors in the Crayola boxes.
http://tinyurl.com/qms8

Now I know I'm getting old, because I don't even recognize the "old" colors
that they are retiring. Something tells me there've been a lot of changes
in those crayon boxes since I was a kid. Back then my favorite color was
Prussian Blue - anyone else remember yours?

Years ago my favorite color was "school bus yellow", but I don't think
that made it to the Crayon box! <GG>

I sure don't remember some of them, but did recall burnt sienna and was happy
to see it survived the cut!

I remember that one, along with burnt umber, as having names directly
connected with oil painting colors. I wonder if part of the downside to this
change is that there will now be mental connections between coloring and
eating, rather than coloring as an art process that could later lead to
painting?

I liked the neon ones. I think they came in a separate box!

And I'm not sure we missed that much. Neon crayons - the mind boggles. At
least they put them in a separate box, LOL.

Santa Clause and our dog ate the whole box (all 8 crayons)
and when she did #2 out in the snow a day or two later it was
glowing! LOL

Hi Anne,

I can't say I remember having a crayola box in my younger years. But in
Australia with the beginning of each new year at primary school we were
presented with a box of supplies. Your post made me remember the pack of
Faber Castell oil pastel crayons we were given. I can remember their
pungent aroma and the perfectly formed "yet-to-be-drawn-with" tips. I've
always had something of a love affair with stationery. Thanks for bringing
back the memory. BTW, my favourite colour was crimson.

Sheila, did you know that back in the cold war years Crayola had to
change the name "Prussian Blue" because it sounded too much like
"Russian" and people didn't know the difference?

There's nothing as inviting as a box of brand-new crayons! It didn't take
my kids long to figure out that every time I got them a new box of crayons,
it was really a sneaky gift for myself. My mom and I still love to color,
more than the kids do!

My favorite colors were bronze, violet-red, and that really pale lavender
whose name escapes me at the moment.

LOL! NO, I didn't know that. One would have thought they would have
changed it in WWI or WWII, except maybe no one knew "Prussians" were German.
Ain't popular ignorance amazing? (Hmmm - it must have been _late_ in the
Cold War years that they changed it, 'cause I'm a baby boomer, and it was
Prussian Blue the whole time I had Crayolas.)

NO CRAYOLAS?!!! Julie, you poor deprived child! You gotta start school with a
box of Crayolas (the fat ones, 8 colors just to start out with), and a Big
Chief tablet and two fat pencils. I can still see my elementary school when I
smell those things.

We said the Pledge of Allegiance, then had a prayer, then David Rinehart read
the 101st <?>Psalm (Make a Joyful Noise unto the Lord, all ye Lands -- he
emphasized words like you would capitalize them typing, that's why he got to
read <g>). Then we sang Go Tell Aunt Rhody, nearly every day. I think Miss
Watson had a thing about torturing 6-year-olds with the image of dead birds.

I was watching Charles Osgood's feature yesterday on Crayola's
anniversary. The name Crayola, BTW, was coined by Binney's wife: "cra"
from the French word for chalk (craie), and "ola" from "oleaginous"
referring to the crayon's oily properties.

Haven't heard that song in years... I remember the Smother's Brothers (I
think it was them...) version of it that went:

Go tell Aunt Rhody,
Go tell Aunt Rhody,
Go tell Aunt Rhody,
She's really Uncle Fred...
